I would say that half of all collectors open their decks, half don't, and half open them some of the time, but math was never my strong suit.

Really, though? I mean, yes, there is some criticism, and there's some sniping between a couple of members, but there's also a lot of constructive feedback here. Some of the criticism is coalescing around a couple of very specific issues. It sounds to me like you will sell to your fan base regardless, but if you want your project to hit it out of the park (as you have done twice so far, congratulations on that), you may want to consider key elements regarding the courts and the nature of the backs. You've received similar constructive feedback in the past, you've addressed some of those concerns, and you made better decks as a result. Like you, my friend, all we want are awesome decks to add to our collections.

You've been around here for a while, Omar; you know there's always been a few nabobs and there's also always been a few folks who fawn all over everything and there's always been those who respond to specific elements of a project they like and don't like.

You've had a couple of wildly successful (in terms of funding, at least) projects and I can only imagine that the pressure that results is far higher than you had anticipated. That kind of stress can sometimes accentuate the negative when there's all kinds of positive around. I hope you won't let the negative wear you down.

Really, though?
This was my reaction as well.

I guess coming from Tempest (being the success that it was) might color this reception, but then again maybe you (Omar) experienced a lot of criticism for that too. I think the funding/backing numbers speak for themselves though, and I'm pretty sure they will when this launches too.

Another thing to keep in mind is that criticism will always be more prevalent than praise. For me, and I'm sure this is true for others too, I only criticize the decks I think is worth improving/fixing/polishing, and in doing so I don't always point out the things I like or that works (and almost never point out all of them). I think people only take the time to criticize (constructively, which I've seen a lot of in this thread) if they care enough about what's shown so far. But people, including myself, are also lazy, so we don't mention every detail that we think is good; I instead opted to say that I generally like it and thus will probably back it, just not to extent that I did Tempest.

+1 to appreciating your presence and comments here :)

Actually it's 96% nowadays since the cost of eating out has gone up recently ;)

I remember my old piano teacher had a poster of a cat making a mess in a pot of spaghetti and a thought bubble that read, "when I do something right, no one ever remembers but when I do something wrong no one ever forgets!" My comment about not knowing why I post came across more seriously than I intended. I forgot the important emoji. :)

Regardless I appreciate the feedback. I'm going to do my best to mitigate and offer the feedback to Kevin. He's a phenomenal artist and designer. But I have to remind myself not to expect Jackson Robinson style illustration from someone who isn't from that vein of illustration. Kevin's style is unique to him and I'm 100% embracing that. I want that. I have had a similar thought regarding the back design being a bit busy especially in the monochrome versions and I have relayed some possible solutions to Kevin. Additionally--worth noting--although Kevin loves playing cards he isn't Lorenzo or Lotrek and doesn't eat/breathe/sleep them. For that reason these WILL be different. But I like that.

I swear to dog, we need a sarcasm/irony font.

But, yeah, I find the smiley emoji has a fantastic mitigating effect. I use it all the time, especially with people who I suspect won't get the joke. :)

That's why I like straightforward feedback than sarcasm-oriented twist and turns. Most folks around here do the former whereas there are a few who prefer the later, and when taken seriously, comes back saying that they didn't mean that, "it was just a joke," or even worse, "gosh your stupid, can't you spot sarcasm?"

Again, personal taste, can't force people to not have their "style."

I think this is a very good point. If this were just any deck, I wouldn't take the time to offer feedback. I just find the courts to be rather flat, and the faces, especially on the jack and queen, to be almost cartoonish. To me, the courts are really the soul of any deck, and I would have a tough time backing this project in its current form as I did The Parlour and The Tempest.

Sorry to hear that. I wouldn't say that they look cartoonish. I would say they are DIFFERENT. But in keeping with Kevin's style as seen on the toms town, standards, and tavern on the green decks.

Other than the business of the back design (and I suppose the court faces are "different"), I think the deck looks great, particularly the tuck case and jokers. I love Cantrell's work overall. Tavern On the Green is one of my favorite decks.

I guess that's why I don't own any of these decks myself.

While I certainly agree that these courts are "different" from most and are "consistent" with some of Kevin's other decks, neither of those terms is synonymous with "good" or "aesthetically pleasing". Of course, for people that like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they will like, but I think these might have less universal appeal than those of The Parlour or The Tempest.

I like this deck at least as much as the Standards deck. The artwork shown so far is nice, but I think the Jacks all have highly punchable faces. Maybe that’s just me.

I’m definitely in for at least the Dynastinae edition. I don’t know if I’m willing to buy a brick just to get the Lotrek printed edition. I’m interested to see the price structure for this round.

I mean no offense at all, but this does seem like a step down coming from the Tempest. Maybe next time Omar can get UUSI to work with him?

I actually don't mind the courts, it's the pips. The aces are good showing the details but the smaller pips could look good, plain without no design.

And I feel the opposite. What excited me about Standards was how it "punched up" the number cards for a change, and it is doing that here, too. I'm in.

I invite you to go back and read the comments in the Parlour and Tempest deck threads posted here on UC. Neither of those previous decks seemed to have 'universal appeal' in fact there were many more detractors claiming they were 'out' because the courts were TOO standard. I've learned that there's no accounting for taste. Chris Ramsay's 1st playing cards are a testament to that. No doubt those have universal appeal enough to sell out. What I can do is create decks that are full of effort and although some may not like KCS approach or aesthetic there is no denying the effort.

I'd love to work with UUSI. NOT because they are a step up or laterally from any designer I've worked with. There's no Up or Down in that respect. There's only different. TO that end I'm very pleased to have the Designer behind one of my favorite decks of all time (The Citizens) and the designer behind a slew of very successful and ubiquitous decks like the Standards, Tom's Town and Tavern on the Green (which is sold out and very hard to come by--and saying that about a Theory 11 deck is rare indeed) and I think Kevin has done a tremendous job in bringing something new and different to the TGW brand.

What I can also tell you is that when you see the collector's box you might change your mind.
