Re: NEOTOKYO Playing Cards by Kardeck / KS
There's a lot to like here. First off, I think the artwork is superb. The neon color choice is also something I like a lot. The courts are great and so are the backs. I'm not a huge fan of the black background color but I don't hate it either. I guess it fits the theme of the deck and it's growing on me.
What I don't like is the tuck. Again, we have another case of a very colorful deck inside a black tuck that has only 1 color. A pet peeve of mine is when the tuck back doesn't match the backs of the cards, especially in this case where the card backs are so awesome. I just wish the tuck had more to it since it doesn't seem to do justice to the beautifully drawn cards on the inside. However, even if the tuck were spot-on I don't think I would spend $22 on this LPCC deck. I appreciate spending a little extra so the rest of the world can get free shipping (which is what they're doing here and I applaud them for that) but only a little extra.
I do hope this funds because it's mostly an awesome deck, minus the tuck, and it looks like it's well on its way.

I also noticed that the court cards are the same characters as their previous Heroes of Japan deck.

Re: NEOTOKYO Playing Cards by Kardeck / KS
I thought you meant the character design but noticed it's different, then I guess you're referring to the character names? These are not some random anime/manga characters... Those are names of significant historical figures of Japanese Imperial History, the emperors (天皇), shoguns (幕府將軍), and assassins/ninjas (忍者).

Re: NEOTOKYO Playing Cards by Kardeck / KS
Kage X was referring to Kardeck redesigning the original Heroes of Japan deck into the Neo Tokyo deck. It's the same people in both decks, with the suits switched around. So one could say that this is a V2 of the HoJ deck.

Ya I know that. Just wished that they used the other characters from Japan's Sengoku period since there's many of them. My favorite is Date Masamune.Decknowledgy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 5:01 am I thought you meant the character design but noticed it's different, then I guess you're referring to the character names? Exactly this, a V2. But I backed this anyway since I'm a sucker for anything Japanese.

Re: NEOTOKYO Playing Cards by Kardeck / KS
Firstly: my strong suggestion is that you revisit your Kickstarter preview/banner image. Yes, the tuck turnaround looks cool, but there's no shortage of deck campaigns that can boast a neat tuck render and literally not a damn thing else - especially in the crowded subgenre of "Japan Cool" - and I almost doomscrolled right past yours because there's nothing in your campaign banner that shows this isn't yet another phone-it-in, low-effort JAB job from some schmuck with a free trial of Photoshop. Your campaign just hit goal; use the opportunity to update your banner and throw in some of your fantastic court art alongside the "FUNDED IN X HOURS!" blurb. You have the art assets to really jack up your "curb appeal" and you're kneecapping (er, curbstomping?) yourselves by not using them.
Speaking of that tuck, though:
However.
If you, hypothetically, were to float the idea of adding a second foil color - to play up the neon-chic cyberpunk vibe, you understand - I would not, in this specific instance and narrowly defined context, be aesthetically opposed to that. Foil's 'spensive, sure, so make it a stretch goal; you'll hit it. (Hell, at 250% of goal as of this writing, you might've hit it already.) It's a single-run KS-exclusive deck, so you may as well go big or go home. Really make it sing. (But please, for the love of Tsundere Jesus, don't get so distracted by the tuck bling that you forget to check your uncut proofs.)
Lastly - and I wondered this about your Heroes of Japan campaign also - how did you source the Japanese text used for the deck? Are you consulting with somebody who knows the language? Forgive me for wording this bluntly, but some of the choices made feel, if not quite "ill-advised white girl tattoo"-y, then certainly a little "Google Translate"-y. I'm particularly eyeing the characters selected for the backs and cards A-10; I'm not well-versed in premodern Japanese naming conventions, so without doing some research I'm not qualified to judge that.
Speaking of that tuck, though:
Paul beats this hobby horse to death because, like all small children, his favorite flavor is "Superman" and his favorite color is "all of them." I generally disagree (because he is wrong) and generally let my disagreement pass unremarked (because I love my son).

Re: NEOTOKYO Playing Cards by Kardeck / KS
Yes, I have an opinion about the tuck case of a deck of playing cards. Lucky for me there exists a forum where one can voice their opinions about playing cards. Unlucky for me there seems to be someone else on that forum that resorts to name calling (like a small child would do) and qualifying an opinion as right or wrong.Merlebird wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 11:25 am Speaking of that tuck, though:Paul beats this hobby horse to death because, like all small children, his favorite flavor is "Superman" and his favorite color is "all of them." If you have a differing opinion, that's fine- no need for that kind of aggression. But what's ironic about your criticism of my opinion is that you actually seem to agree with me! You're suggesting that the artist not only change the banner image of the tuck (which if it were a perfectly good tuck, why not showcase it?) but also change the tuck itself.
So what the hell did I do to you? Your comments were uncalled for.

Absolutely nothing. In every conversation I've had with you you have been nothing but good-natured and good-humored, and through direct interaction as well as my reading of your posts I've come to recognize and respect your aesthetic perspective: you know what you like and are both reasoned and forthright in stating what that is. So it was out of a sense of fond familiarity with you and your general take on things that I planted tongue firmly in cheek and aimed for lighthearted roasting. But I don't know you like that, and it was presumptuous and out of line for me to act as though I do.
I apologize for my thoughtless disrespect. It won't happen again.
Apologies to everyone for the thread derailment as well.

For the record I'm not obsessed with colorful, blinged-out tucks. I just like them to resemble what's inside. My criticisms of this tuck are meant to be complimentary. The tuck case isn't awful, it just doesn't exemplify the deck of cards inside it IMO. As you put it, adding Japanese writing to the tuck just because "Japan is cool" doesn't do it for me since the cards are so much more than that.

Well maybe opening the decks would be an easier fix than always trying to influence artists' design intentions to give you a peak of the card back on the tuck case. Because that will probably never (or rarely) happen.

What difference does it make to you whether or not I open this deck? I'm not trying to influence anybody, I'm just voicing my opinion. Which apparently seems to be a crime on here now. Am I not aloud to have an opinion on this forum? Jesus Christ- let's smarten up, people.masagin303 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 9:24 am Well maybe opening the decks would be an easier fix than always trying to influence artists' design intentions to give you a peak of the card back on the tuck case. Personal note: First, the tuck is fantastic. Its cyberpunk without being too over the top. The artwork is EXACTLY what I expect from a cyberpunk-style deck. Its detailed, but not overly complicated. With this design, if there was ever a clear plastic version of this deck, it would be a knockout. As it stands, I would rate this in my top 10 decks obtained this year (so far) in regards to interpretation of theme.

I missed the KS. Is there any way I can get these? I also need the Secret Egypt. Skotos was gorgeous!
