For some reason the line from the start of the book of "A Wrinkle in Time". "It was a dark and stormy night..." Of course that phrase was already well used before L'Engle.

I hate to be THAT guy, but... the more I see, the more I "meh". The standard set by Parlour and Lotrek in general is so high that I think I overhyped myself.

Eh, in my opinion it's good to be honest. You're doing that so you're not being "that" guy who is just negative. I can see how you could over hype something yourself with speculation of what you may be seeing in the future. Consider giving it some time before being too swayed one way or another. Sometimes it's better to be able to see more than one card and a back.PiazzaDelivery wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 3:05 pm I hate to be THAT guy, but... the more I see, the more I "meh". This really is Lotrek doing Lotrek style. It's classic and well defined work. The face card we see is good stuff, quite solid.
TL:DR It's completely up to you.

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
Truth is this is why I hesitate to show WIP sometimes because it’s hard to have the vision that producers and creators have for decks. The tuck box art is flat and texture less. This will change decidedly with foil and embossing and premium paper. Things will feel different.PiazzaDelivery wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 3:05 pm I hate to be THAT guy, but... the more I see, the more I "meh". To be fair, that's exactly what I'm doing. Earlier in this thread, I wrote: "I definitely want to see the rest before making a decision either way, but I really hope that the remaining court cards don't involve disembodied floating limbs or pigcake."Fes wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 5:09 pmConsider giving it some time before being too swayed one way or another. I'm merely giving my opinion as we see more.

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
idk, i find myself not liking as much as i want to.
abit too emphasis on "TWG". didn't like monograms to be featured so big on the back, its even on the front of tuck, monogram and what it means.
courts being too 'standard-ish' doesn't help. i'm curious how the AoS looks like.
i know, its all about the brand. probably a very minimal pledge, or just a pass for me.

The two things I hate the most are W.I.P. and renderings. Unfortunately I have to do both and the problem is that I don't justify devoting time to make things look like what they'll be when finished. Imagine CRYPT courts in renderings...
Don't be fooled by what you see here, just wait for what you'll get. Seriously.
Regarding the TGW monogram, it's not only about branding. Sure, Omar wants it somewhere but I see it as a shape which is very beautiful and one can do a lot with it. Since Lorenzo did such a great job with the monogram, I'm happy to exploit it a bit more.
As for the courts, these will be by default standardish since the deck isn't meant to be just a "beautiful deck" but it has to be easily used in gameplay AND in magic. This makes heavily custom courts simply out of the question, at least for this deck. I don't know if Omar will decide to change direction in the future but for now standardish is his choice. He is the boss, I'm just a poor designer trying to make a living
My inspiration is a set of courts from a very old Bee deck from around 1895. There are a lot of floating hands there and I thought it would be cute to keep them but I see what you see. So eventually I'll make an operation to re-attach them to their owners' bodies.

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
As I've said previously, the back design is undeniably beautiful. Anyone who liked Parlour and is complaining about the courts here is a hypocrite. They're both standard-style courts. And of course the real thing with foil etc always looks far better than a flat 2D image, obviously, I'm mostly interested in seeing what the different colours and special edition will be though.

Today I learned, all standard style courts are the same.

Yeah honestly, that's one of the dumber takes I've seen in a while.

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
I think Adonael means that if you liked the Parlour you cannot complain about the Tempest courts being standard. Of course you can prefer one set over another but honestly, what's wrong with floating hands?

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
I have been thinking more about the title of the deck, specifically "tempest" in light of the designs shown. Tempest - a violent windy storm. You can definitely get that from the tuck with the illusion to a lighthouse and the waves in the scrollwork. It works nicely. However, the back design stumped me for awhile. All I could see was the hourglass design from The Parlour. Obviously, you are trying to build subtly off of The Parlour. So, I go review the back design again with tempest in mind. Then I notice you placed the back on its side! It is no longer an hourglass. It is waves being reflected in opposite directions on the top and bottom and the winds blowing above the waves. I am slow, but I get it now.
Then I thought, man wouldn't it be better if that same scrollwork could be included in the courts to carry that tempest them subtly on the courts while retaining the classic court overall design...
Yeah, Lotrek and Omar were way ahead of me.
The more I look at it, the more I like.

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
I really love your take on traditional court cards. My only concern is the half-striped pip. It looks too modern to me and goes a bit against the usual TGW "antique" presentation in my opinion. Maybe it's just that first thing that pops in my mind is something like this deck:
Remember Earth clearly.

Re: TGW Presents "The Tale of the Tempest" designed by Lotrek
Actually stripes is a very old way of shading things. Goes back to the time everything was engraved before being printed. For me it's quite the opposite from modern...masagin303 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 2:20 pm I really love your take on traditional court cards. My only concern is the half-striped pip. Was thinking the same thing plus Lotrék's explanation. There may be some more to this. We'll look at it as we finalize the designs.Bradius wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 4:05 pm I have been thinking more about the title of the deck, specifically "tempest" in light of the designs shown. REally loving Lotrek's work on the courts. They are elegant and classic yet modernized and legible.

Definitely a beautiful set of courts. Lotrék always manages to amaze even with standard courts. Does this make them non-standard then? #showerthoughts

IMO, the only true standard courts are the ones we've all seen in mass-produced decks (Bikes, Arrcos etc). These are custom courts done in a standard style. With every new court card shown I'm closer to thinking that this will be a deck with most beautiful standard courts I've ever seen.

Well I think we were still figuring out how “standard” we wanted to be. We will go back and adjust some of the first ones we did.wingedpotato wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 6:00 pmYeah, I didn't care for that first queen but every card shown since then has been *chef's kiss*masagin303 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 3:34 pm With every new court card shown I'm closer to thinking that this will be a deck with most beautiful standard courts I've ever seen.
