Big foot prints to step in here. The execution of the theme is not to my liking though so, despite me being a Miyazaki-san maniac, I'll not get this deck. That's solely a matter of subjective preferences though. You can tell by the details that this is not just a licensed product but a well made product by fans of Studio Ghibli.

Same. I would kill for a good Ghibli deck. This ain't it. Plus even the EB comes out to about $24 shipped for a single deck.Harvonsgard wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 1:47 pm Big foot prints to step in here. I don't know anything about anime. I do know though that its very hard not to smile when you first see that tuck. Maybe a few for the store is in order...

Re: GHIBLI PLAYING CARDS KS
I am in mainly because of the case. Overall I am sure they pay a handsome license fee and hence the high price. It will always make a unique gift for someone down the road.

Yeah, that's crazy.wingedpotato wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 2:47 pm...Plus even the EB comes out to about $24 shipped for a single deck.
And it says "Fulfillment by Gambler's Warehouse", but the US shipping cost is over $7 for one deck.

Re: GHIBLI PLAYING CARDS KS
This really doesn't surprise me, considering most of the art looked like screen grabs. Maybe one day we'll get a Ghibli deck worthy of the source material.

Re: GHIBLI PLAYING CARDS KS
Well, that convinced me to cancel my pledge. While initially I thought it's a cute deck with a cute case, and it claimed to be licensed - who knows how far away they are from resolving this. Last time Hansen Chien did his Chicken Nugget vintage set and he disappeared after months of 'negotiating', only for me to discover months later he released them somewhere else. I think Hansen have some great design ideas but I am getting tired of his continuing disregard of Intellectual Property (eg. The Hidden Treasure). But I digress.
Maybe it's a language or fine prints thing? Like they thought they were licensed to do all sorts of things then Ghibli came back and told them no no no, why don't you get a Japanese translator and stop using Google translate.
In the end, it's just too expensive for a 'toy deck'.

From the communication to backers:
So let's see how this plays out.We would like to apologise the interruption of our Ghibli Deck Kicketarter campaign. We are as surprised as you might be and in all transparency, we are still trying to figue out why our project had was put on hold.
As you already know, we have the lisence and we will update you as soon as possible. For the moment nothing is clear and we are directly in touch with Ghibli Studio to find a solution and move forward wirth our kickstarter.

Re: GHIBLI PLAYING CARDS KS
Don't bet on it; it's likely a game of words. They reached out to me before they shared the deck publicly, and I kept probing them with the licensing issue plus sending them the copyright terms from the official Studio Ghibli site, in which they had no answer. One week later, they told me they got the licensing without providing any evidence. Those images are clearly pulled from stock images and not illustrated by themselves.Eric Lee wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 8:38 pm From the communication to backers:So let's see how this plays out.We would like to apologise the interruption of our Ghibli Deck Kicketarter campaign. Studio Ghibli is THE Japanese Disney; there is no way such a huge and successful studio would grant a nobody their license. Here are the copyright terms from their official site: http://www.ghibli.jp/misc/
And Omen claims they've got the license in one week going through Japanese copyright laws and process? I call BS.Copyright

Ah, didn't know about the license issue in just one week. Asian bureaucracy never moves that fast for something like this. Yes, I think that's the end of this one. If they actually did get a license, they probably went through an "agent" who "secured" them a "license" in 1 week.Decknowledgy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 5:03 am

Re: GHIBLI PLAYING CARDS KS
Does anyone know who is David Bull? Here is a video of him talking about old Japanese woodblock print carver Ito Susumu and another of him telling a story of one particular print of his own. You get a clear idea about David Bull through these video. Please watch.
Why is this relevant to this deck? Well, here is another video by David Bull, directed to Studio Ghibli, asking their permission to use their characters in his work. Please watch and use the English subtitles unless you speak Japanese.
David Bull still does not have that permission.
If anyone thought that these two boys actually got a license from Ghibli you are gullible as hell.
