Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
From the description (I was too late to put this in the pledge box, apologies!):samurai007 wrote:I have already backed the deck, but I had 1 concern. The "Subscription" option to get the next 2 decks you make... what if those decks don't happen to get funded or made? Will you offer those people a partial refund, or give them 2 additional Sultana decks, or what?
As for the air-cushion finish, ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE! Changing now! While we will do everything in our power to get the rest of the card trilogy printed, we at Deco Playing Cards can offer no guarantee that these decks will be produced. The funds from the subscription level will go directly towards financing our next projects, i.e. paying artists. Since these artists will need to be paid for their time whether the project is successful or not, there will be no refunds for the subscription level if the next cards are not produced. Additionally, at $25, you would be receiving the decks for a lower price than they will be otherwise available. Please pledge with this in mind.
Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
Geez. What is it about this deck that's holding people back? Lack of Zombies?
The price isn't ridiculous, the funding goal isn't too high, it's USPCC, it's two-way, it's got the right finish, the colors are sweet, the design is first-class ...
I'm just totally drawing a blank here. Anyone?

Right now, I'm not backing and KS decks unless a) they really grab me and b) I think it will be fulfilled.GBAllison wrote:Geez. What is it about this deck that's holding people back? Lack of Zombies?

In this case, I'm not 100% on the design and... well the price *IS* ridiculous. $22 for one deck shipped internationally? $33 for two decks? These are premium prices for an unproven deck designer and producer. Also, $8K for a USPCC deck is a money loser (it's only $7200 to the project creator which we already know isn't enough for 2500 decks). I'm not convinced they would be able to fulfill based on that goal. In this case, a low goal is a warning sign to me.

Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
I like it and I've backed it, I hope it succeeds. I think the sheer number of decks being made on KS now, + they are 1st time creators, + not a whole lot of advertising that I've seen means many may not know about it.
Also, lack of skulls.
![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)
(just kidding, don't include skulls on this deck!)

Are those dashed lines around the edge part of the design?GBAllison wrote:
Or is that just part of the design template, and they will not be on the final deck?
Sorry if this was answered previously.

Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
Question from the creator:
What would you guys think of plastic card stock, like KEM or the USPCC Prestige deck, in order to add durability? That way, spilled drinks and accidents wouldn't spoil your investment, which I understand is not insignificant with international shipping prices.

I love plastic decks, but it would depend on the maker, some are not that great.DecoCards wrote:Question from the creator:

Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
I still haven't decided on these yet. Thinner borders would just about push me over the top, but plastic would make me wrinkle my nose, turn away and shake my head disapprovingly.
Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
Agree with the -1 for plastic. Also agree with the +1 for thinner borders. But I've never taken the thick borders as real ... specifically ...MagikFingerz wrote:Thinner borders would just about push me over the top, but plastic would make me wrinkle my nose, turn away and shake my head disapprovingly.
I've always assumed that the borders would get fixed in final production. When you send the artwork to USPCC, I thought they would insist on "standard" borders as part of their quality control process. I've never seen a Bicycle deck where the indices are accidentally indented an extra eight of an inch or so. (On the other hand, maybe the quality control standards are different for Bicycle, which this isn't, and all the other USPCC, which this is.) BTW, I *have* heard complaints about unrealistically *thin* borders being promoted on a project, and how USPCC won't actually let those go to press--so they obviously have some say (and an interest) in the matter of borders.
So Ned, maybe a mockup showing more accurate placement of the borders might help. Clearly people are still being thrown by that, and by the dotted lines, and maybe other pre-production artifacts.

I like me some thin borders. I dislike me some USPCC intervention everytime though:(
Of course I understand why.

Re: Sultana Playing Cards -Now Live on Kickstarter
This project is on the closest CLOSEST edge! Just a few hundred dollars short of the funding goal!
People talk about that end-of-project bump ... I'm hopeful ... but I would hate to see this miss by a couple of decks.
Not to put too painful a point on it but ... jeez ... Pixel Lincoln scored more than a third of their *total* funding in the project's final three days. This is a well-designed deck and Ned has been *really* responsive.

Here could be one of the reasons it isn't getting funded:
While we will do everything in our power to get the rest of the card trilogy printed, we at Deco Playing Cards can offer no guarantee that these decks will be produced. The funds from the subscription level will go directly towards financing our next projects, i.e. paying artists. Since these artists will need to be paid for their time whether the project is successful or not, there will be no refunds for the subscription level if the next cards are not produced. Additionally, at $25, you would be receiving the decks for a lower price than they will be otherwise available. Please pledge with this in mind.
So if you pledge $25 and the other 2 decks don't get produced, I guess you are just SOL. Basically, you will end up paying $25 for one deck because from the above statement, you are not getting any refunds for the other 2 decks if they are not printed. In addition, I don't think $8000 will be enough to have this deck printed, pay kickstarter/Amazon fees and pay the postage to have everything shipped out. I think if it does get funded, the backers are in extreme jeopardy of not getting their decks at all or having them take forever to ship out due to lack of funds.
This one should probably be avoided at all costs, IMO
Thanks!

the ONLY thing I don't like about it, is the fact that the face cards are blue and the back is red. If the back was a blue color, I'd be all over it, but the contrast is too sharp IMO

Well it looks like it's gonna get funded (with a big wave of the hand to @Joshua Robinson for his pay-it-forward assistance), and not with a ton of room to spare ... so this'll be a terrific chance to see whether $8K on a USPCC deck is too low to succeed.BMPokerworld wrote:... I'll admit that when I asked why people thought this project was not attracting backers, I was expecting things like "they're beginners" or "the middle eastern look isn't gonna sell in today's Americana-favored marketplace." But avoid at all costs? With all the dreck we see come across KS, this deck gets the avoid-at-all-costs label? Well, I asked. And I wanted to hear the unvarnished truth about what your reasons were.

2,500 decks say @ $2.50 each = $6250
Current fees 10% = $ 911
US Shipping(Estimated)= $1,000
International shipping(Estimated)= $ 500
Shipping supplies(Estimated)= $ 200
Artist (guesstimate)= $1500
Misc. Swag= $ 100
Total Expenses (Estimated)= $10461
Total Pledged to date: $9103
Total projected shortfall (Estimated) -$1358
If you break down the numbers, it appears that there is just not enough money to have the deck produced, pay the artists, ship the decks out, pay for the swag and pay the fees. Is it possible everything could cost a little bit less and he will break even on Kickstarter? Yes of course. Will he have a lot of decks left over to sell when the project is complete? Of course he will. But we have all seen other projects that don't have enough money left to ship out the decks until he sells the decks that are left over.
I actually thought the design of the deck was very nice and I like it a lot. But once I read the post about what would happen to your money if the rest of the decks are not produced, it just became not worth the risk, IMO.
Thanks!
EDIT: Also keep in mind that $1,222 (This number could increase significantly depending on how many orders are international) of the total amount pledged so far, is actually for 2 decks that don't even exist yet and that money has to be deducted from the total amount pledged for this deck. So that means that the amount pledged for this deck is actually around $7881 and the estimated shortfall is -$2,550.

If you want to back someone who is telling you that if the other 2 decks in the trilogy are not produced, you won't get the balance of your $25 back, then go right ahead. But don't come on here 6 months from now bitching and moaning the other decks aren't going to get produced and you paid $25 for 1 deck.Wow.

Ok, cool. It wasn't that I doubted the source whatever it might be, but if it had been yours that would mean that you had gotten your decks and others would be on their way. Did Steve simply back them or do you think he got special treatment? Again, just curoious about the timeframe to expect ![Mr. Green ](./images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)
