Handprinted Medieval Monsters Deck by Rex Rattorum

Unread post by Räpylätassu »

Found the following deck on etsy, an artist named Rex Rattorum has createad a 32 card custom deck, handprinted with woodblocks carved by the artist. The decks are made to order and cost 32 €. There are 3 decks on stock right now at the moment, I think that I will make that number go to 2. Shipping is from France.

With his own words:
As a collector of eccentric playing cards myself I have decided to design, carve and print my own deck.

For the figures I got inspired by woodcut and medieval monsters and used four main types: the scales (mermaid, mermen and other fish people), the feathers (alkonost, gamayoun and sirin), the hooves (centaur and satyrs) and the fur and claws (cerberus, sphinx and werewolf).
And for the colors, instead of using traditionnal french ones like spade, heart, club and diamond, I have used the germanic ones: bell, acorn, heart and leaf.

So in this deck of 32 cards (from 7 to Ace), each card has been meticulously designed, carved and printed one by one, by myself and by hand on a thick paper (400g) and comes wrapped in a gauze fabric.

Please note that because it's handmade the printing can be irregular and that's what makes it unique.

I got my deck. Really amazing, I can take some pictures if needed, although the pictures display the artwork quite well. The artwork also looks better on your own hand, especially those bird suit court cards.

Came without a tuck box but wrapped in this kind of white cloth. I wouldn't mind a better kind of string so that wrapping them back in the cloth would be easier, which would make a kinda unique tuck box. Someone with nimble fingers could make that cloth a really nice looking tuck box with proper folding and some nice use of strings.

The artist has uploaded 5 more decks for sale for the same bat-price in the same bat-website. Given that these are handmade via woodblocks that means the artist can always make more of these decks, I would imagine he'll make more once those 5 decks are sold.

This is super cool deck, recommended.

I love this deck too. The illustrations are very original and the whole product seems to be made with great care. I'd be sooooo curious to explore the whole process behind the finished deck (design and realization of the physical product)

Yeah, definitely unique.
