You are aware of the Chinese government suppressing the whistle-blowing doctor, right? They've known about it since November, and some have even suggested mid-October. I can't tell if this post is a joke or not, but just in case it was:Harvonsgard wrote:LOL... the good old blame game. It's a disease/virus; blame mother nature for being inventive. It's a global world we live in.
*shrugs shoulders and looks at the fact that the common flu still killed more folks this flu season in my country than Covid-19 - not even mentioning traffic fatalities*
This isn't serious, right? Everything we've seen so far suggests that COVID-19 has a substantially higher mortality rate than the flu. One country's stats doesn't change that. It is also much more contagious.Harvonsgard wrote:*shrugs shoulders and looks at the fact that the common flu still killed more folks this flu season in my country than Covid-19 - not even mentioning traffic fatalities*
I mean, I did mention that it could be a joke. Seemed to be a tad ambiguous is all.Harvonsgard wrote:You kinda missed the point. Playing the blame game is the joke
Why semantics. You're right, I should have said "that we have no reason to believe is sentient".Btw, bold claim that the planet is non-sentient.
I'm, wait for it... dead serious (pun intended). It's just my comment to the current situation so grain of salt is advised. I'll wait with an opinion on the topic until the mess is cleaned up. It's a rather boring topic anyways.MagikFingerz wrote:This isn't serious, right? Everything we've seen so far suggests that COVID-19 has a substantially higher mortality rate than the flu. RE name: I don't see any reason to call what has been named COVID-19 anything else unless you have an agenda, which some people (not all) do have when calling it the Chinese Virus or whatever.

I never play the semantics game, it was meant genuine. I would say there are some reasons to believe that the earth is sentient but that is deep down the rabbit hole of discussions regarding the realm of metaphysics.PiazzaDelivery wrote:Why semantics. Maybe elsewhere so as not to hijack the discussion, but I'm genuinely curious as to what those reasons are.Harvonsgard wrote:I never play the semantics game, it was meant genuine. Yes, I am aware that the Hubei Provincial Government Officials tried to suppress the doctor who wanted to alert the world, but it was no longer than two weeks because the virus spread so quickly that they couldn't suppress it any longer. (Please note that I am not defending the actions of the officials that tried to hide it and was very saddened to hear of the passing of the whistle-blowing doctor)theCapraAegagrus wrote:You are aware of the Chinese government suppressing the whistle-blowing doctor, right? I'm not too invested in the virus - as I almost couldn't care less about it. I can link you to the abundance of information being shared across about 100 threads on the CGC boards (by doctors, lawyers, and Chinese nationals)... Mostly non-sensational types of people.
What agenda? To make people aware of where it came from...? The only people I see with an agenda is the media, who started calling it China/Wuhan coronavirus/flu, and are now attacking those terms as "prejudicial" - which they simply are not.MagikFingerz wrote:...RE name: I don't see any reason to call what has been named COVID-19 anything else unless you have an agenda, which some people (not all) do have when calling it the Chinese Virus or whatever.Harvonsgard wrote:*shrugs shoulders and looks at the fact that the common flu still killed more folks this flu season in my country than Covid-19 - not even mentioning traffic fatalities*

I repeat what I wrote earlier, one of the first know cases started to show symptoms on Dec 10, so based on that, I doubt that anyone would have know about it in November, let alone October. I did read an article that says that the suspect the first case might have been as early as late November, but even so, it would have been the first case and no one would have paid attention to it or thought that it was highly infectious until weeks later when it started to spread and people became symptomatic, so there was nothing to suppress. Please get your facts straight before spreading more disinformation .

It's not disinformation, man. Read this thread and open your eyes to real information that you aren't being spoon-fed:

It is a fact that China knew about it and sent people carrying the virus and/or infected to other countries. If they're not the #1 authority to blame - who is!? It is a fact that the PRC interfered with the world's ability to combat this thing. By the time the truth came out, we're already f&*ked. So what exactly was your point, again?
But why call it anything other than COVID-19, which is what all medical professionals currently calls it? I understand that you don't have an agenda, but you can't deny there are prejudicial/racist people out there with one.theCapraAegagrus wrote:What agenda? My company has an office in Wuhan. It was called "Wuhan flu" from Day 1. They have no agenda.
I don't agree. In Norway we actually do say "influenza". Besides, "the flu" is just a shortened version of that. And brand names are not nicknames.Harvonsgard wrote:Simple answer, not everyone is A) medical professional and it is B) common to use nicknames for things. That's what humans do. Simple example is that a lot of folks in Germany refer to tissues as "Tempo" which is the most known tissue brand. Do you ask folks why they say Tempo while tissue is the technical correct term for it? I mean when you have a flu you say you have a flu, don't you? You don't say I have influenza, right?

As for China, what are we blaming them for? Being deceptive about the virus, sure, but I don’t know what else for. The point I am making is the governments in the rest of the world have had ample time to react to the virus since Jan and hardly any did anything and now we are in a hot mess. If you can’t see that or don’t accept it, then there is nothing I can do to change your mind. I will leave it at that.

I see your point, and I understand why it happens, but what I'm arguing is that there is no rational reason to choose to do so. It would be like calling a Hurricane that already has an established name (like Katrina) something like "The New Orleans Hurricane". Which I'm sure happens, because what you say is true. But it has no positive consequences; at best it causes confusion about what you're actually referring to, and at worst (in the case of "The China Virus") it reinforces racial or bigoted stereotypes (like the Asian-Americans we've read about being blindly attacked and basically blamed for the virus). Regardless of your own agenda or lack thereof.Harvonsgard wrote:You're free to do so. You stated that you don't see a point in calling it anything but the correct medical term. Which is cool with me, I just provided multiple (imo valid) perspectives. If you think they aren't valid, so be it. If language is something that needs to be talked about fine with me again but it certainly is missing the point of language.
Just came back from Coles - a supermarket here, after doing my weekly grocery run. I saw a woman shouting at an employee on the counter blaming her for the "Chinese Virus" (this is the term she uttered and not any other name).Harvonsgard wrote:The analogy is wrong though and that is what makes it so weird. You and others are pretending it was Sars-CoV2 from the get go and then some racist prick renamed it Wuhan-virus to drive nationalist propaganda. It wasn't hey this is Sars-CoV2 and then someone backnamed it Wuhan-virus. So the simple rational reason is it was the Wuhan-virus before it became Sars-CoV2 (or do you believe that they knew the RNA and it's relationship to Sars-CoV from the start? - that would be a pretty interesting take). Again, this is arguiung about if it is better to call a wolf either wolf or canis lupus - with the difference that there is the underlaying allegation that everyone that uses wolf is a racist or nationalist or simply an ignorant f*ck.
Arguing about language is what adds nothing to the conversations though, lol.
