You are aware of the Chinese government suppressing the whistle-blowing doctor, right? They've known about it since November, and some have even suggested mid-October. LOL... the good old blame game. It's a disease/virus; blame mother nature for being inventive. It's a global world we live in.

Assigning blame to something self-governing, often unpredictable and not sentient is rather ridiculous. Yes, we live in a global world, that's exactly why we can assign blame to China's handling of the outbreak.
Traffic fatalities are patently unrelated to the matter at hand.

Re: Last person to post wins. . . . .
You kinda missed the point. Playing the blame game is the joke (at least for me) and I find it rather ridiculous to play it. Which is just my commentary and everybody is of course free to proceed with business as usual and taking part in it if it's to one's pleasure.
Same goes for discussions if calling it Wuhan-virus is racist or not. Which is kinda ironic seeing that nobody seem to care that Ebola is named after the river in Zaire it first came up and that the first two letters of MERS-virus stand for Middle-East. Even more comical is that the Spanish flu that nobody complains about being named Spanish while the origin of this virus was the United States.
Btw, bold claim that the planet is non-sentient.

This isn't serious, right? Everything we've seen so far suggests that COVID-19 has a substantially higher mortality rate than the flu. One country's stats doesn't change that. It is also much more contagious.Harvonsgard wrote:*shrugs shoulders and looks at the fact that the common flu still killed more folks this flu season in my country than Covid-19 - not even mentioning traffic fatalities*

I'm, wait for it... dead serious (pun intended). It's just my comment to the current situation so grain of salt is advised. I'll wait with an opinion on the topic until the mess is cleaned up. Is it severe? Yes. So what? Life is always severe. Your first breath is the first step towards death.
For the name thing; I never heard someone using Chinese Virus. I personally call it Covid since it flows better than Sars-CoV2 and is shorter than Wuhan-virus. So no eggs in the basket but devil's advocate is fun and again - MERS, Ebola, Spanish flu = okay but Wuhan-virus = agenda/racist!?
I am ambiguous So you sensed it partially right.PiazzaDelivery wrote:I mean, I did mention that it could be a joke. Seemed to be a tad ambiguous is all.Harvonsgard wrote:You kinda missed the point. Playing the blame game is the joke
I never play the semantics game, it was meant genuine. Yes, I am aware that the Hubei Provincial Government Officials tried to suppress the doctor who wanted to alert the world, but it was no longer than two weeks because the virus spread so quickly that they couldn't suppress it any longer. I repeat what I wrote earlier, one of the first know cases started to show symptoms on Dec 10, so based on that, I doubt that anyone would have know about it in November, let alone October. I did read an article that says that the suspect the first case might have been as early as late November, but even so, it would have been the first case and no one would have paid attention to it or thought that it was highly infectious until weeks later when it started to spread and people became symptomatic, so there was nothing to suppress. As I'd travelled, I am self-isolating since 13th March. I'd both high n low days. Self isolation takes its toll but I am playing my part so that others can be safe.
Someone has rightly said "Be the change you want to see".
Now...a story....When I was in college, I used to write screenplays..One of my things was to write conspiracy theories. I used to even read a lot of fcition then and had bookmarked any or all possible webpages related to conspiracy theories. Remember when an event has elapsed, it is easy to find patterns and map it to something unrelated which when put together will make sense to human mind. Even in the COVID-19 situation, a lot of theories has been out now like China did it for world domination, the patient zero came from US, it was a bio weapon etc.
You’ll never know, unless you could rewind the clock and play out the same scenario by being in the epicentre at the right place and at the right time. Correlation doesn’t imply causation.
I am glad that I studied Responsibility Process and can see where an individual (politician, civil servant, friend, colleague etc.) is at. At present you are seeing a lot of blame game. You can't help as it is very challenging to change behaviors & attitudes.
Check this video out if you have time....

It is a fact that China knew about it and sent people carrying the virus and/or infected to other countries. If they're not the #1 authority to blame - who is!? It is a fact that the PRC interfered with the world's ability to combat this thing. By the time the truth came out, we're already f&*ked. So what exactly was your point, again?

Simple answer, not everyone is A) medical professional and it is B) common to use nicknames for things. That's what humans do. Simple example is that a lot of folks in Germany refer to tissues as "Tempo" which is the most known tissue brand. Do you ask folks why they say Tempo while tissue is the technical correct term for it? I mean when you have a flu you say you have a flu, don't you? You don't say I have influenza, right?

I don't agree. In Norway we actually do say "influenza". Besides, "the flu" is just a shortened version of that. And brand names are not nicknames.Harvonsgard wrote:Simple answer, not everyone is A) medical professional and it is B) common to use nicknames for things. That's what humans do. You're free to do so. You stated that you don't see a point in calling it anything but the correct medical term. Which is cool with me, I just provided multiple (imo valid) perspectives. If you think they aren't valid, so be it. If language is something that needs to be talked about fine with me again but it certainly is missing the point of language.

China's governmental deception made the situation worse. Not sure how you can perceive that as debatable. The rest of the world did NOT have "ample time" because China sent workers to other continents and countries when they knew that the virus wasn't contained. They screwed everyone else.

Re: Last person to post wins. . . . .
I see your point, and I understand why it happens, but what I'm arguing is that there is no rational reason to choose to do so. It would be like calling a Hurricane that already has an established name (like Katrina) something like "The New Orleans Hurricane". Which I'm sure happens, because what you say is true. But it has no positive consequences; at best it causes confusion about what you're actually referring to, and at worst (in the case of "The China Virus") it reinforces racial or bigoted stereotypes (like the Asian-Americans we've read about being blindly attacked and basically blamed for the virus). Regardless of your own agenda or lack thereof.Harvonsgard wrote:You're free to do so. You stated that you don't see a point in calling it anything but the correct medical term. Which is cool with me, I just provided multiple (imo valid) perspectives. If you think they aren't valid, so be it. If language is something that needs to be talked about fine with me again but it certainly is missing the point of language.
You could counter virtually any "people should or shouldn't do X" argument with "it's just what people do", but doesn't really add anything to the conversation.

Re: Last person to post wins. . . . .
The analogy is wrong though and that is what makes it so weird. You and others are pretending it was Sars-CoV2 from the get go and then some racist prick renamed it Wuhan-virus to drive nationalist propaganda. It wasn't hey this is Sars-CoV2 and then someone backnamed it Wuhan-virus. So the simple rational reason is it was the Wuhan-virus before it became Sars-CoV2 (or do you believe that they knew the RNA and it's relationship to Sars-CoV from the start? - that would be a pretty interesting take). Again, this is arguiung about if it is better to call a wolf either wolf or canis lupus - with the difference that there is the underlaying allegation that everyone that uses wolf is a racist or nationalist or simply an ignorant f*ck.
Arguing about language is what adds nothing to the conversations though, lol.

Just came back from Coles - a supermarket here, after doing my weekly grocery run. I saw a woman shouting at an employee on the counter blaming her for the "Chinese Virus" (this is the term she uttered and not any other name).Harvonsgard wrote:The analogy is wrong though and that is what makes it so weird. See I've refrained from providing details around the age, demographics etc. of the persons involved and I am sure my community feed on the facebook group I am a member of, will be getting abuzz right now with all sort of details either taking sides or remaining neutral because there were quite a few people there at that time. I understand that it is quite an emotional & overwhelming moment for most if not all, but someone has rightly remarked that "Be the change you want to see". If certain terms are triggering such a reaction in a community, should we still be using those in our vocabulary is my question.

Re: Last person to post wins. . . . .
After writing a nice three paragraph answer for you Sunish. UC decided to log me out again...
So the TL;DR:
1. The answer is yes since A) speech should be free and B) the analogy is broken it is not the term that triggers that emotion
2. Word policing doesn't work anyways so why continuing this bs?
3. If it would work why did nobody complain the last time Ebola (and the other examples I mentioned) was on the news? (A point that strangely nobody with an anti-Wuhan-or-China-virus stance wanted to get into)
4. Watch the Joe Rogan podcast with Chuck Palahniuk - it is such an awesome food for thought regarding speech, writing and thoughts.
I've invested way too much in this for someone that doesn't even uses the terms that are the point of discussion but as you said, or better quoted, Sunish, I live by be the change you want to see in this world and we are but one family under the great heaven so, for all my sisters and brothers, I love speech to be free.

Nobody has ever said this, though. I explicitly stated that some are, and that I know many aren't.Harvonsgard wrote:...this is arguiung about if it is better to call a wolf either wolf or canis lupus - with the difference that there is the underlaying allegation that everyone that uses wolf is a racist or nationalist or simply an ignorant f*ck.
This has nothing to do with policing, it's just having a rational discussion surrounding the reasons for using various names. I still haven't seen a good reason to call it anything other than COVID-19.
