Antiqued, toned or textured backgrounds?

Unread post by BolltMan »

Hi,

I’m working on some illustrations for a new card deck. How do you feel about antiqued, toned or textured backgrounds? I love drawing with a paper texture like this, but I also like a nice fresh white background on cards. What do you think?

Thanks ;)

I personally like a fresh white background. Cards will get a weathering effect with time anyways, therefore no reason to fake it imo.
I don't mind it though. If it fits the theme, it wouldn't be a reason to not get a deck.

what he said. Internal logic aka thematic consistency and/or clashing with a white background. Either remix the classic or maintain the style.

The Parlour used an off-white background instead of regular white which I personally love and would like to see more often :D

If it suits the artwork, but never ever go for a dark 'ancient' look or heavy brown weathering. I've seen it again and again and it's hideous! Subtlety is key.
