The style and appearance of these cards are based on the traditional German-suited playing cards that have been used in parts of Europe for hundreds of years, and are still used today. However, the Commoners cards are drawn with the typical international standard (French) suits ... so keen observers of my previous work will spot that this is in a similar spirit to my Viceroys and Pike and Clover cards. Much of the artwork is also inspired by my local landscape and surroundings in Cumbria in the north of England.

As with all of Ian's decks, I am in. Love his work. I also like that his campaigns are nice and simple, one deck, no limited editions, no gilded editions, nothing confusing, just buy the number of decks you want. And, they are reasonably priced.

Re: Commoners playing cards (Ian Cumpstey) / KS
This was a no-brainer. German-style decks are common playing cards here and you see custom ones pretty rarely. I always wanted S17's take on them but Ian's work is brilliant as well. I'd only prefer darker and more pronounced card backs.

A little more expensive than previous campaigns as far as I'm concerned, but nothing outlandish. I think postage has gone from 4 quid to 6.
Glad to be on board again Ian.

Re: Commoners playing cards (Ian Cumpstey) / KS
I get that the prices are a little steep, but Ian is one of those artists I really like and a few bucks is not going to hold me back. I get that it might not be for everyone. However, for me, his old world style is just perfect. This deck is just classic Ian Cumpstey. I may not be getting a brick, but I am in for two and probably three before it is over.

Although, this type of deck is just not for me, I am happy to see someone making it for those who do like it.

Re: Commoners playing cards (Ian Cumpstey) / KS
Backed, great work again Ian.
All courts and number cards look great like they are from a differnt century, but somehow i don't like the backs. Not the design itself but the color... this very light red or brown feels so boring. Maybe they look differnt in real but the one pic of the backs makes the design nearly invisible. How about a dark smaragd or olive green dunno....?
Another thing, why is this going to be printed with MPC ? Last two decks were printed by Cartamundi, which was fine. I have no problem with MPC, just out of interest.

I don't like the design but I want it. I'll wait till I'm less conflicted.

After being bombarded by all the fancy, highly detailed and incredibly artistic decks; Ian's deck stand out with such a simple, charming clean design. Like a palate cleanser so to speak. $ is tight, but I'll see if I've got the extra $ to squeeze out before the campaign ends.

Love the faces and the theme, would have wished that he sticks with German suits though. I hope it funds, so that I'm able to postpone my decision if I add these or not.
The tuck box and the backs are huge deal breakers though...

After a decent night of sleep I can say that the artistic style is actually pretty cute and I'll back once my wallet recovers.

OVSUB, I recall being the same way. My recollection is that I wasn't enraptured with Ian's design instantly. Over time, I have come to like his designs more and more. Also, he has some great books as well so you can further enjoy his artwork.

Ian just posted a project update stating that due to the Coronavirus related problems with MPC's China based production, he's switching the printer to Cartamundi (B9 slim stock).

Re: Commoners playing cards (Ian Cumpstey) / KS
My decks arrived! I really like Ian's designs.
I don't see this deck yet for sale on his website, but it should be available soon. Liber Ludorum is still available, which I think is my favorite deck he has designed.

Re: Commoners playing cards (Ian Cumpstey) / KS
They are really wonderful. Very interesting take on German playing cards' style. My only minor concern are the deuces which look more like aces in German decks. Here's for example the Bohemian pattern. Look at the aces and compare it with deuces in Commoners. Mainly a question of pip placement and rich graphics, where maybe vertical pip placement and more simple graphics would help to distinguish it from original aces. But that's a minor one and maybe only visible for people who grew up with these German patterns on their decks as we here in central Europe.

FYI, I'll note that these were an excellent addition to Ian's body of work, and if this style intrigues you at all, I give this a highly recommended.
