it’s interesting… we often get private messages from past backers on KS thanking us for reaching out to them as they love collecting playing cards but “life” was interfering…. the office… the kids…school… etc… and our email or update caught their attention, and they back our new project.

also gmail and their pre-sorting into categories works great, our mails end up in promotion or updates, which means less unsubscribers and more backers.

I had an interesting conversation with one of our partners - who is manufacturing our custom stamp seal for Leonardo Masterworks. We were discussing the exact steps needed to begin the production.
Embossed-Seal-05.jpg
This is the most ambitious stamp we've ever designed. It’s custom perforated. Ink and foil. A custom size, and it’s three dimensionally embossed.

Most foil seals are not truly 3D, but simply a raised, stamped out effect. These are the "single-level" embossed gold seals we all know, that you can buy at the local stationers. They have two levels, and are simply stamped out (no pun intended!).
embossing-01.jpg
Our seal is quite different in that it will be 3D embossed, or "multi-level". In other words, our seal is basically a small relief sculpture of Leonardo!
3x-Leos-a.jpg
A custom (and rather expensive) precision tool is used to press Leonardo’s likeness into the foil. We are checking out now how much detail the die can hold with the foil.

This is why we love creating playing cards, where one can use different materials and techniques, and make something beautiful and new.

Yes, that could be a cool add-on and/or a special gift for our backers… just the front part of the seal, turned into a square stamp, we could have a sheet of 16 of them, and also put them on our shipping packages.

Most people here know how I feel about seals. This on ebooks pretty cool and I appreciate the innovation if the 3d embossing. However, isnt the 3d effect going to pretty much be ruined when you bend it over a corner?

And I would still hate to have to cut through it just to open the deck.

Not if it is applyed how he has shown above. The head is solely on the back. I wonder though if the material is sturdy enough that it doesn't get squished during transport or if someone applies accidently a bit pressure on the seal...

A cool feaure nonetheless, but this is more for the tucksists in here :D .

Leonardo’s 3D relief sculpt will indeed be only on the back, so no edges or corners involved.

You bring up a very good point about seals in general… obviously their primarily functional purpose is to “seal the tuck”. But this causes collectors the dilemma of having to break the seal to see the cards… This seems sort of an unsolvable problem, although we have been pondering solutions to it :-)

- a seal that is “resealable”.
- providing an extra copy of the seal.
- a rigid “clamp on” seal that is reusable and removable.

With no obvious solution, collectors buy two copies, one to open and one to keep sealed.

Any other ideas?

The foil should be sturdy enough to hold the 3D design, but thanks for pointing that out, we will double-check with the supplier. The 3D amount in millimetres is relatively small, as it is a relief sculpture and not a full free standing sculpture. Also, we will be carefully packing these pairs ourselves, as they are a Studio Limited Edition and have lots of handwork involved, as you can read here.

The best solution to a seal that will not have to be broken to open the deck is to put the seal at the bottom of the deck, like TGW and Stockholm17 did for The Parlour black limited deck. Of course, they still cellophane the outside of the deck and Cartamundi cellophanes the cards inside the tuck box, so in that case, you are still "breaking in" to check the cards.

The seal at the bottom is a good solution, especially if it complements the tuck design. Leonardo Masterworks has our metal Gold Stage on the bottom, but for a future project a bottom seal is definitely on the table.

The cellophane wrapping... that's a strange thing too. I remove it from all my decks, even the unopened ones, as I want to feel the texture of the tucks, and you can't photograph cello wrapped tucks satisfactorily.

>>> hey LD - Here you can see the amount of 3D extrusion our seal will have (approximately). The final files will be done by the end of the month and then off to manufacturing.

mmmm, the parlour black… I try to break the seals cleanly with a sharp xacto, but its such a shame with so many decks having pretty seals now. love the embossed head, will the silver one be the same?

Yes, the seal will be the same design, but in silver. The entire Silver stage is mirrored, meaning that the horse will be facing the opposite direction, so the Gold Stage and Silver Stage face each other on our Bog Oak Pedestal.

I like cards about artists, composers, scientists. Would like to get one of the black pedestal stands. If I buy a rhombus polyhedral can you make a custom one with a space cut out for that and not the coin? thankx.

Yes, I could have our woodsmith make that for you, as all the Bog Oak work - the Pedestal and the Vault - our custom built. I will make a mock-up for you and post it tonight.

Yes, basically anything we can do to customise an order we do.

A large proportion of our backers come back for our next project, the personal connection means everything to us as creators.

Thank you for your thoughts! :ucstar:
