The Rebel Poker Deck
The Rebel Poker Deck
Hi United Cardists,
I just joined this blog recently, wanting to present a poker deck I ben working on in last couple of years. Currently I am preparing a campaign, and I would like your feedback.
The Rebel Poker Deck is a thematic deck around for different clans / guilds in a post apocalyptic world. The clans represents a different cultures and ideologies, rooted on legacy of an ancient cultures of Japan, Greece, Arabia and Ashkenazi. Each of the characters is described with its unique set of virtues and flaws, embedded as an integral part of the card artwork.
The Rebel poker deck plays with you — shuffling your fortune, bringing a lucky hand or your ultimate fail.
You can help me by giving your thoughts on some of the following questions:
1. Do you like the idea and the artwork in general?
2. What unique features you would like to see - limited series, foil etc?
3. Would you be interested in additional products, such as a collection of prints, t-shirts?
4. Would you be interested in obtaining the original inks?
And of course, I am here for any additional questions / comments / discussions
I am very excited to be a part of this community.
Best,
Uros

Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
These are the sort of weird that I like very much ! The deck name is a bit too generic imo. I chuckled at the "Holy Order of the Left Ventricle", that would be more to my flavor as a deck name. The graphics are very nice and well done. The Queens are espeicially awesome.
For foil; I love it when it is used intricate, to highlight details and adding depth.

Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
This style is so quirky cool. I love it! I do think the tuck design needs a bit of help. It does not show the greatness of what is inside.
I cannot describe precisely what the issue is. It looks like there is I graphic that would be a cool sticker stuck on a blue or red background. I also think the white sides with no design, just wording, almost never looks good to me. It's like we couldn't figure anything nice out for the sides so let's just put some words there.
Those courts are excellent!
I love foil, probably more than most out there, but I am not sure this deck would benefit from it much. Perhaps the title or wording on the tuck would be ok in foil. Unless the entire tuck was redesigned with other elements where foil made sense, you could leave it out. Even the tuck shown could benefit from matte stock though.
I rarely buy anything but decks in campaigns. I think I have only added some stickers once. However, some may love things like prints and such. I think if they are something doable for you that isn't going to impact the campaign or yourself in a negative way financially, then go ahead and offer them.

Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
I definitely like the idea and the quirkiness, this kind of style seems perfect to add onto other products but since I don't buy any of those I can't really help with that. Given the style I can't really see where foil would help, the most important thing will be making sure it is printed with a top-class printer like USPCC or Cartamundi etc, and that the tuck is a nice matte stock preferably with embossing.
Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
Wow, thanks for your feedback everyone!
I guess it is time for you to meet the Rebel.
The Kickstarter campaign will contain the full storyline, for each guild and for the the events around these characters. They are all participants in the War of Four Crowns. While court cards belong to opposing monarchies, the joker is a rebel, an anarchist, opposing them all.
In the best case scenario, if the campaign is super successful, I would offer a print set of oversizes A4 cards, on the thick paper suitable for framing, with a short story for each of the characters.
Some further thoughts on the things you suggested:
- I definitely agree on the tuck box comments, at least to the part of the side text. I did more versions for the box design, but it seams like if I add more details I will have to reduce the colours. I will try some more stuff. Idea with the foil would be to use it on tongue and XX in the eyes
- Yes, it is going to be USPCC
- Stickers also sound like a good idea

If you have lore around your design a booklet is always a nice addition.

I really like these. It looks like a very unique and fun deck. Is it just me or does the face on the joker look like Mr. Potato head? [emoji39]

Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
The artwork is really great, but to me, these are just art prints pasted onto cards. That's not a bad thing per se, but what makes good playing card art to me is two-way/mirrored designs (of the courts and back design, mainly). If the court cards weren't on a card template, you'd never know they were a king/queen/jack. I agree with STL that the big white empty space around the artwork doesn't do it any favors. Love the aces though, they are really well done.

There is a lot art and pop-culture references in this deckSTLBluesNut wrote:I really like these. It looks like a very unique and fun deck. Is it just me or does the face on the joker look like Mr. Potato head? [emoji39]
Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
Fully agree. Unfortunately, it is very late in the process and all the designs are hard to edit as they are hand made. This is my first deck design, so I lacked some experience. Anyways, I will do it differently for the next projects.MagikFingerz wrote:The artwork is really great, but to me, these are just art prints pasted onto cards.

Re: The Rebel Poker Deck
Personally, I like the back design, however, you will definitely get some comment on them being a one way back and some that will not purchase because of it.
The originals inks do look very cool. I just do not buy them as I collect cards not art prints. They are offered on campaigns here and there. I have no idea on how well they sell though.
