Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
I spent 35 years in the ad biz, starting as an illustrator/graphic designer before ending up as a creative director/partner. I collect cards for their artistic aspects from clean designs like LTDs to more complex themes like Jackson's. I appreciate other creatives' work.
That said, if there's anything new under the sun I'd like to see it. Everything is derivative of something that came before. As far as Jackson replicating elements from previous sources and combining them into his own creations, I don't have a problem with that. He's been very upfront with his creative process, even including our thoughts. It's the people that think they invented the moon every time they do something they think is "new" that get under my skin.

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
Update #9!
"Thanks guys for all of your great comments and ideas. I'm excited to announce that now you can pledge for, or add a new 18" x 24" 1 color Screen printed poster of the original "1 Way" card back design.
I have also included some minor tweaks to the back design.
Thank you guys for all of your support."
I wish these cards were in my hands right now...

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
That is a nice little add-on if anyone was attached to the original back.
Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
I wanted to get this deck initially but i found out that the decks on KS are getting a little more pricey ... so .. skip...

According to one of Jackson's previous updates, you have 4 more chances to get one deck at US$11 instead of the usual US$15:lumpyliew wrote:I wanted to get this deck initially but i found out that the decks on KS are getting a little more pricey ... so .. skip...
"This is a list of the cards that when released, will be followed by a Celebration deck pledge tier. So when you get an update for these cards be ready for the release an hour or so later. I will be doing these at random times, so I can make it possible for backers around the world to take part.
Ace of Clubs / Ace of Hearts / Ace of Diamonds / Joker 1 / Joker 2"
At that price, I think it's not too shabby, unless you're an international backer.

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
Ryric - your right the poster is a good fluff item. i'm sure he has emails for dice and chips as fluff items. hope he keeps it simple.
Jackson - your running out of high rewards. got any "originals" laying around? you do have the 2 jokers and 2 gaff cards to give. ppl like to be included.
the new back makes sense. remember top left is critical. "Novus" to mean "New"

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
This actually almost seems to make since. With the overall theme to the deck Jackson would need a lot of control over the Idea of the gaff and jokers. Original art work would be a nice Reward teir that some would pay highly for.sprouts1115 wrote: Jackson - your running out of high rewards. got any "originals" laying around? you do have the 2 jokers and 2 gaff cards to give. ppl like to be included.

I so want this deck, but really just can't justify the price + shipping international. Will just have to hope I can get it reasonably in the aftermarket.

I agree. I also wait, do not understand the high price for international buyers.Strag wrote:I so want this deck, but really just can't justify the price + shipping international. Will just have to hope I can get it reasonably in the aftermarket.

Well i pledged for one deck at the early bird just in case i cant get my hands on one from a reseller, would have pledged for more given a more reasonable pricing!!rave wrote:I agree. As for the shipping, he is following Albino Dragon's shipping structure which is of course highly over-priced, for more on this read the synthesis thread, but neither are likely to do anything about it since both projects are funded. Hopefully they arent as myopic as i think they are, or perhaps a little economics would do them some good, it isnt about how high one can set the price, but rather what price and quantity can net you the most profit in the end. I would much rather sell a deck at $8 for 4000 decks than a deck at $15 for 800decks, just some food for thought.

I'm in 100% agreement. If he had been more realistic with the international pricing I'm sure his total would be double what it is now. I'm only in for one for the same reasons as you, but I imagine a lot of internationals are keeping away.volantangel wrote:Well i pledged for one deck at the early bird just in case i cant get my hands on one from a reseller, would have pledged for more given a more reasonable pricing!!rave wrote:I agree. Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
Here is my latest update:
This one’s a big one! You guys have been absolutely incredible. It is my goal to make this campaign as meaningful as possible for my backers. In the next few days, I will be releasing some exciting goals and rewards to prove that to you. With your help and input we can accomplish so much. Without you guys, none of this is possible.
I absolutely love this project. I can’t wait to pick up a pencil or get on my computer and start working on these cards each day. Having you guys actively involved is half of the enjoyment, thank you.
I’m still relatively new to Kickstarter, so I’m still learning at an exponential rate. The releases over the next few days will reflect even things that I have learned on this project.
Ok! enough of me soap boxing - lets get to the goods!
Introducing the Federal Fifty Two Collector’s Set. The Federal Fifty Two Collector’s set consists of four items:
1 Signed and numbered Uncut Sheet
1 Signed and numbered 2 Color Screen Printed Poster of the new “Two Way” back design.
1 Signed and numbered Federal 52 Deck
3 Signed but not numbered Federal 52 Decks.
The really cool thing about this collector’s set is that all of the numbers will be matching. There will ONLY be 52 of these collector’s set and it will also be the only Federal 52 Decks that I am going to sign. (Except of course if we run into each other someday)
There will be a 1 first edition of this collector’s set that will have the #1 (signed also) of each the following, the uncut sheet, screen printed poster plus 5 additional signed decks (not numbered).
Even more exciting than that, I am stoked to announce the Stretch goals. I have other smaller rewards planned but these goals will be driving force throughout the rest of the campaign.
@ $40,000 The Gold Certificate Deck will be released. This Deck will have a completely unique and redesigned box and “Two Way” Back design that is inspired by the Gold Certificates of the early 1900s. These cards will be of the same quality and finish as the original Federal 52 Deck.
Too say a huge thank you EVERY Gold Certificate Deck will be priced at $11 (+7 for international shipping)
@ $85,000 I will be releasing what I am calling the Private Reserve Note Deck. This deck will culminate the entire Federal 52 Project in its Back Design and Tuck Case Design. This deck will only be printed once, and in limited run. This deck will also ONLY be available through Kickstarter. Every Deck will be signed and numbered. The Private Reserve Note Deck will be available for $15 (+7 for international shipping)
That's not all guys! Like I said earlier this is a learning process for me. As an active way to say thank you and gesture to try and make things “right” for my international backers. The next Ace Celebration Deck release (which will be this weekend, hint, hint) Not only am I making 100 decks available for $11, If you are an international back that snags one of the Celebration 100 decks you will also receive a second deck for FREE. Yes I said it FREE! You will still have to add $7 for shipping.
All these goals are subject to change and the designs could change slightly based on your feedback.
That’s it for now guys. Please keep leaving your comments and feedback about the work that I am doing. Your input is a huge factor in my creative process. Thank you so much.

Extra decks doesn't really make up for shipping being too high, but I appreciate the effort nonetheless. Though I'm pretty sure that if you lower the shipping and/or the per deck price, you would hit the next stretch goal yesterday.
Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
Something about the colouring/look of the gold deck reminds me of Canadian Tire money.

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
I have just done a little more thinking, in economics we have a term called 'price discrimination', where if possible we would like to charge the respective price for the same good at which nets us the maximum profit for different distinct groups. In this case we clearly have two groups, the locals and the internationals. Clearly we are paying different prices for the same thing, and many of us are seeing the big difference as ridiculous and hence staying away. May I put out a suggestion, where instead of charging the full price of shipping on top of the price of the deck (which is what everyone is doing right now), you take a small cut (perhaps $2, there is still much to be gained) from your profits and lower the cost of shipping being beared by internationals, bridging the gap between the two groups, i believe that this would bring in many many more international buyers, you will make less per deck off us, but be able to sell more, and hence make more profit. Not many designers have been able to see this, although i think Sean is one who has, pity the community has not taken favour to his deck. Selling a deck at any profit is better than not selling a deck at all. Im sorry for bringing economics into this, but at the end of the day, selling anything is not just about the design, there has to be a business side to it as well.
Ps. Kudos to you for adding the extra deck for international buyers, but it makes the early birds a little left out, shouldnt the early adopters be appreciated a little more?

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
I love the design of the Gold deck, but I don't like the color, its too orange. If it were more yellow, over even brownish, I would like it more. Kudos for trying to appease the international customers as well. The $85,000 stretch goal is pretty ambitious, I think only one other deck, the Pedale, ever hit that mark.

Don - just saw Jackson's Gold Certificate Back. i don't remember seeing "Fold" or "Call" on money. if you think about it, if your playing an opponent he will see "Fold" most of the time and you could mess with them and switch it to "Call"
Jackson - like your private reserve stretch goal. at $15 of deck; hopefully it's glided edges. reserve with glided edges is the way i intend to go.

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
You have here really a great deck! One of the best that came out lately! Everything is well thought and put together.. One deck that I would buy for sure if it was at most $11! $15 is way too much for one deck of cards, knowing that you had spent many hours thinking and designing it, even so it's too much! And the international shipping... well...everything was said on that!
Hope that BMPokerWorld get it in his store later, so we international buyers can get it at a more reasonable price!
Nonetheless it's really a wonderful deck!!! Great work Jackson!

The USPCC has discontinued Gilded edges for approx. 6 months. They are looking at a new process to produce them so It may be discontinued indefinitely if no new improvements are made. Also, gilded decks are very nice but are terrible for handling. That's the kind of thing you have to keep on a shelf outside of its tuck box.sprouts1115 wrote:Don - just saw Jackson's Gold Certificate Back. i don't remember seeing "Fold" or "Call" on money. if you think about it, if your playing an opponent he will see "Fold" most of the time and you could mess with them and switch it to "Call"

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
4pm - it not uncommon in the past for 1st run to be glided silver or gold edges and gilded is suppose to sit on your shelf.
Jackson - dude, for your private reserve, if you include glided gold edges and the new UV ink as just a small strip as someone suggested it, sorry can't give you credit forgot your name; and if you made only 1500 and signed and numbered them you would have a private reserve. how much extra for Uk ink? it's "Novus" and it's out. use it.

What? I dont think you understood my statement. I never mentioned anything about it being uncommon. I mentioned it being discontinued, as in he can't gild his decks for at LEAST 6 months.sprouts1115 wrote:4pm - it not uncommon in the past for 1st run to be glided silver or gold edges and gilded is suppose to sit on your shelf.

The last Gilded deck was the Bicycle Allure. This option is no longer available at USPC.

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
Hello, all! I'm a new kid on this block.
I just wanted to join in on the praise for this deck in progress. To be honest, I was a little unsure at first (I think the mustachioed Hamilton just hit me the wrong way) but now I am very impressed at this obvious labor of love which just keeps getting better.
If I may be permitted to comment on certain aesthetic aspects (boy, I sure am brave for a stranger in these parts): I agree with many that the new two-way back (that is the standard back now, right?) looks better with the eagle on top being right side up - not that it was ugly before. I might also suggest the green treasury seals be reversed as well. When a card player spreads his hand to look at it, the other players see the left-hand side of all but the rightmost card. (Look at my avatar.) Therefore, the seals on the left - or at least part of them - will be visible and would look better upright.
For similar reasons, the plate numbers, series year, and similar text elements seem more pleasing to me if they are in the same alignment as the image they are near: all such text on the Queen of Diamonds, and the "Series 2013 A" on the King of Spades, look odd to my eye. And on the AoS, the different orientations of the large "ACE" and the smaller text at the bottom of the card have a similar disorienting feel.
I think one reason this is happening is that Jackson is trying to reconcile currency, which has a definite right-side-up orientation, with playing cards, which for the most part do not. I don't necessarily think all the faces have to be truly two-way; after all, a standard AoS - and to a lesser extent many spades, clubs, and hearts are not fully symmetrical. The AoS here would be equally pleasing if ALL the text went the same way, or if ALL the text at the bottom were upside-down. I'm just getting a strange vibe from the text elements as they are.
All that being said, it's Jackson's deck, and no matter what he decides, it will be one of the most beautiful of recent vintage.

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
I agree with ChasFink, and it also applies to a flourisher's fans as well as table spreads (which are often done in an arch).

Re: Bicycle Federal 52 - LIVE on Kickstarter
chasfink - nice intro. I agree maybe in his "private reserve note deck" he could pop some green up in the left "border corner badge" that is some prime real-estate. i also liked your saying (Look at my avatar). people will also see "Novus Ordo" which i think means "New Order". they might see "Novus" if they are lucky when they do in fans.
Magikfingera - your right too. but he is also selling serial numbers and plate id's. i don't think he will have a problem with plate id's but serial number he might have a problem. i saw A 5 5 O R G Y once in california on a license plate and thought "how did he slip by!" got any more Magikfingera? might have to take this too: http://www.unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=46" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Jackson - your rewards are very creative. i'm really watching. i've notice some have steeped up in rewards; that is what you want. you have to think of all those 300 backers at $15 are itch-en to step up. but someone has already bought your hightest reward "BomB" 1/52. lay another one. do it with your private reserve note deck. make it at least $1000. i'm assuming your printing 1500-2500 decks for the reserve. how many decks have you sold sofar? i really like your meat and potatoes $200 reward. that is good but what if gets fulfilled? for you next "BomB" i suggest a (1/100) signed deck of the "Private Reserve Deck" and every fluff item also at (1/100). you might even have to make a new poster and T-shirt. i know your riding a wave, but have you also looked at media. does anybody know some good media links jackson can visit?. jackson you need to expand. make that wave a typhoon. your at 30 days now.
