Nerds & Jocks Decks

Unread post by RandyButterfield »

Hey UC!

I haven’t posted any in-progress designs in quite a while, so I,figured why not.

I’m working on my next collaboration with my buddy, Mike Wilson. Mike and I did the OCULUS and Pollock Decks together.

Our new project is a fun one! The Nerds & Jocks Decks are semi-custom and are inspired by 80’s movies. I have six Courts finished so far, and those six reference Revenge of the Nerds, Weird Science, general nerds and jocks 80’s culture and Animal House (technically made in ‘78, but I think it paved the way for the craziest of the 80’s movies)!

They’ll be printed by Expert (Taiwan Printer). The Tucks will have similar features as the Pollock Tucks - Premium Matte paper stock and clear UV Spot Ink in strategic areas. Embossing will be a Stretch Goal.

Instead of a custom Brick Box, these will have a custom 4-Pack Box! The VHS Tape design is the bottom panel. I’m not sure yet if the 4-Pack Box will have clear UV Spot Ink (like the Pollock Brick Box did).

We’re shooting for a February Kickstarter. Below is a bunch of images. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks, Randy

These look great, Randy! I think embossing would take this to the level it deserves, so I'm glad you are considering that for a stretch goal.

I would suggest having the top and bottom of the 4-pack box retain the VHS image like on the bottom. In my opinion that would look better than images of the two tuck boxes.

I can't wait to see more images and I look forward to February! I know JR is doing an 80s deck in 2020 as well, so I think next year is going to be, like, totally radical.

LOL ... fun theme. Lovely executed. The only minor flaw for me is the customized pips. I get that you wanna leave no detail untouched but the way they look now is kinda meh for me. The rest is awesome and funny.

Imagine the M on the jocks tuck with actual fabric   - Will never happen due to costs. But wouldn't hurt as a possible strech goal as well.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

That was one of the first things I thought of. I figure if JR can do a knitted tuck case (Deck the Halls), why not have a felt M?! You could also have a piece of cotton fabric for the pocket on the nerd deck. It would be easy, right?!

Thanks for the input everyone!

I’ll keep everything under consideration when finishing the design over the next few months.

I thought about utilizing Expert / Legends’ ability to incorporate embroidery onto the Tuck Box, but that’s only available with their China Printer. We definitely want to use the Taiwan Printer! Plus, I don’t have trust in it’s ability to align well with actual 4-Color graphics (with Jackson’s Holiday Tuck and the Legends’ Persian Tuck, there was just the embroidery + plain Tuck material). The M would also need to be reduced / moved to fit fully onto the front panel, which would take away from the overall design. And yep, the cost would be exponentially higher.

A quirky design like this will most likely only draw in around 300-400 Backers (if that). Mike and I are going in expecting this, so we’re not planning to go nuts with crazy materials and print features.

Thanks, Randy
