It appears the metal display stands are a mandatory purchase with the decks, which presumably is what really accounts for the price.

I personally can't help but feel like this would get a lot more backers with lower tiers available.

I think that this particular Leonardo horse has been beaten to death one too many times. And I agree that the price point is ridiculous.

I'm guessing these are leftover decks from their previous Leonardo project:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/14 ... ying-cards

but with new tucks and the stands.

I'm not the market for this, but looks like there is one. 45% funded already.

Hi, thank you so much for your kind message…

The tucks are fused together - paper and metal - so they aren’t really stands, but a new and sculptural tuckbox.

We looked at separating the pairs at the beginning, this project has been in development for a long time, but we decided in the end that with only 500 available they should remain as pairs. They belong together! :-)

We’re sorry you feel that way. Actually it is quite common for Artists to revisit the same themes later and in new ways.

As far as the price is concerned, the quality speaks for itself, our internal costs are quite high. They are really meant for serious collectors, a lovely way of giving back to our loyal Leonardo backers with something of great intrinsic beauty and value.

We set 500 of each (Edition Gold and Edition Silver) aside back when we ordered after our last successful Leonardo campaign - just for this special edition. We knew we wanted to do something special for this year that marks 500 years since Leonardo’s passing.

Yes! The funding is going incredibly well, and we are completely overwhelmed by the love and support we get from our friends and fellow card lovers here at UC! Thank you all!!

I agree. The price is far too high for what it is. I might pay $20 for the STL files and print it myself. There appears to be no added incentive for me, since I own the original decks.

Revisiting is one thing, this seems like a fancy re-release. As I stated, I would be willing to pay for the STL Files as you show these can be 3d printed. If the decks offered something above and beyond a tuck remake, like an actual new deck, I would consider it more value for money.

It is also rather insulting to say that these are for "serious collectors only." Just because I cannot afford your price point does not mean I am not a "serious collector," and insinuating such results in an instant HARD PASS from me.

Thank you for your comments. The Gold and Silver stage are created in zBrush, and working together with our foundry are cast, not 3D printed. A 3D printed steel 24K gold plated Stage would cost northwards of $50!

We’re happy to hear you are an original backer of Leonardo. My dad has worked hard on Leonardo, whom’s works he loves deeply, and as we all know, Leonardo revisited and “re-released” many of his greatest masterworks. There are many examples of this in his body of work.

Sorry for offending you, I didn’t mean too. I was certainly not equating “seriousness” with the financial ability to buy. Please accept my apologies.

For me, and for others as I assume, it's not the the ability to buy. It is the desire to buy such an edition or spend the money for a tuck swap. As good as it may look and with the metal. There are decks I have not bought, from my absolute favorite designers, that were tuck swaps.

I wouldn't say I was offended by the statement but I think it shows a sense of arrogance or self importance to say this was made for "serious collectors". I appreciate the participation here and I really don't think the statement was made with the meaning of how it reads.

An apology was already made above. I just wanted to make a post to say that it wasn't only one person that read it that way. It's all good, just be a little more conscious of wording.

Thank you for writing us. We have addressed, apologized for this mistake (four projects ago and 4 years!) and refunded the three backers out of hundreds that wanted refunds immediately. I am a little befuddled as to what else you would want us to do?

We have had so many wonderful projects and satisfied happy backers.

Peace to you and I wish you well.

Just to be clear the acknowledgement for your mistake was only made here in the UC, and the refund was also done to the members that asked for them, you never mentioned that on your KS campaign, so most of your backer still believe that they are holding on something special, but they don't, it is just a deck of cards with some nice artwork. So you don't need to play the good guy, we know the type of person you are.

And for this so called "... revolutionary tuck design!" what I see is just a deck stand, and it's not particulary very interesting, even less at that outrageous price...

In short what I really just wanted from you is a bit of humility, but your ego doesn't allow you that kind of luxury.

Peace for you too and all the best of lucks for your campaigns.

Thank you for agreeing that it’s nice artwork. We are doing our best as Artists.

We appreciate your honest opinion about our work - there is no such thing as Art that everybody likes.

In closing all the best to you going forward.

Your obsession with what you like to call and dismiss as 'tuck swaps' (many of which actually haven't been, as has been established elsewhere) is quite frankly becoming a bit embarrassing.

Anyway, I'm not quite into the ageing effects on the cards themselves which is why I didn't back the original campaign, but interesting idea and execution. Regarding the price, the Steve Minty Ascension Signature decks come to mind, they have 3D printed parts integrated onto the tuck and cost $69 each pre-order (although they are gilded as well), so I think that adds some perspective.

These were among the first cards that took my eye when I first started collecting 3 or 4 years ago. Never liked them enough to back tho. This is the third ... fourth iteration since? They were expensive even then, but ~$160 the pair is

You know what adonel, I and many other people here have had it with your holier than thou, condescending attitude. You are a smurfing dick or bitch, whichever it is.

When I say tuck swap I mean exactly that, the same cards with different tucks. So smurf off. There have been plenty. I'm so tired of getting on here and reading your bullshit. So kindly smurf off.

These are admittedly the same cards in a different tuck box, from the designer. So eat shit, dickhead. Tired of your personal attacks on people here so here's one of my own you smurfing twat. smurf off. You're a piece of shit and this forum would be better off without your smurfing attitude and self righteousness. Did I say smurf off yet? smurf off. smurf.

I'm not even saying tuck swaps, yes tuck swaps, dick, are bad I just have relevantly pointed out that I am one that doesn't buy them. Others have shared the sentiment.

I've message a couple of mods in here for you being and smurfing prick. Can someone finally do something about this smurf?

Edit: I forgot, smurf off.

Ehm... well...

I quite like the deck and the idea. Congrats on getting funded. I'm not backing since, I started to limit myself in purchases that I'm 100% convinced of and not one percent less.I would be more than happy though, to see some pictures of the final result after fullfilling. The renders look good but I'm old fashioned, I love me some actual prototypes of the final product.

If I understand this campaign, it not about producing the Leonardo decks (two decks from a previous printing are included though), but is really about producing stands based off of Leonardo's horse design. I like the design and is different than other playing card display pieces I have seen. Given what is proposed, I don't think the price is unreasonable (about $100 for the pair of stands and decks shipped to the US). Heck, I am spending about as much for something similar for the Frozen London Diffractor deck in an "ice cube". I think this would make a stunning display piece for the gold and silver Leonardo decks.

Hello there,

Thank you for the kind words and support. I had a question about the metal Stages for Leonardo Masterworks in a PM on Kickstarter, and I thought it will be of interest here on UC.

The question is “Why are the metal stage and paper tuck fused together?”

The simple answer is that it’s not a “stand” but an integrated new tuck. This was clear from the moment I received the first 3D printed prototypes. They fit so well, there was an instant feeling of “oneness” and that they were “one object” and not two.

I know that when you hold the final Leonardo Masterworks in your hands you will sense the same feeling, that you are holding in your hands a singular work of Art.

kind regards,

I think it is an interesting choice to have them as one piece, not necessarily a bad one though. I think most of these will be mostly display pieces so it will generally appear the same wither way.

The only thing is if they were stands then a collector could choose to rotate other decks in and out of them for display.
