Room XVII: quest and deck of cards.

Unread post by Stockholm17 »

Hi all!
I just wanted to let you know that on november 17, at 17:17 CET (Central europe time) I am releasing this deck and the quest.
The two things are merged in one product. You do not need the deck to complete the quest, but the process will be a little easier - less tedious - if you buy one.

Here is the newsletter I wrote today with all the explanations: https://shoutout.wix.com/so/c2MvKdaNK#/main" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And here is the showcase/teaser :)

I know I do not interact that much on forums, I just find it difficult lol
Save the date!

I can't wait for these... I am notoriously crap at any form of puzzle though which is going to be a problem. 8-)

Didn't realise the Faro and the card guard would be back as well. Nice touch though for anyone wanting to get the three deck series. Yes I know it will now be a four deck series but the Gatekeeper is sooo expensive on the resale market. :(

I know your pain Decknowledgy: my gaming group excluded me from playing Detective: City of Angels because I have a MA in criminology. Relegated to GM.

I've been hanging out for these. Look awesome. $45+shipping is a lil on the steep side for me, especially at this time of year, but I'm in.

Damn... I'm always on tour on sundays and I don't think this quest will last till monday to be solved. That Prize is priceless. Congratulations to the winner in advance. I can tell you that there're very few items that I'll ever be jealous about, but that framed Room17 will be one of them.

From what Lorenzo has said, this will not be easy to solve. So it may not be solved in a day or two.

I figured that, but I do know some card nerds  . But the main reason I don't have real chances are that my internet acces is pretty limited (as in only at work atm). So I'm not really pursuing it. We'll see, maybe it is some Enigma level sh** .

Am I right in thinking Lorenzo has done something similar before? If so, how hard was that one?

I'm not aware of that. I just know that there is something hidden in the House of the Rising Spade with that alphabet Lorenzo created. So I would say a homework for everyone to do is to get her/his key ready to be able to translate the letters.
Since Bradius' post I'm really fantasicing about this quest to not be solved like in a year or so  .

I am not aware of any contests like this he has done. However, someone who has been around since the beginning might be able to say for sure. At least none since the start of the Gemini campaign.

I do know that there are Easter eggs hidden in Lorenzo's stuff. For example, awhile back I was wondering if the key and lock shown in the Gemini jokers (see below) was a tease to the next HotRS decks, where keys and locks were a prominent theme. That turned out not to be the case. However, Lorenzo did say the key was to "unlock" the bulb so you could drink the liquid inside. It is stuff like that which is fascinating to me.

Holy crap  I didn't even realize that the joker was a sealed flask with two types of liquids inside!

I was about to say I had a vague memory of him doing something similar for Gemini. I don’t think the prize there was for framed single-digit decks.

In Gemini there was a quest and you had some time to solve it (several days or a couple of weeks, I don't remember).

The winner was randomly chosen (live, so there was no cheating) between everybody that had managed to solve the quest.

I think the quest was on Lorenzo's site. Perhaps he can reopen the quest so you can try to solve it just for fun.

I actually found the quest with solutions https://www.stockholm17.com/gemini-quest. You can give it a go before scrolling down to the answer.

If the Room17 Quest is of a similar vein, I might be in with a shout of solving this. Apart from the last Enigma (which I didn't try to solve as it was kind of already completed), the first two where pretty straight forward.

Famous last words

Thanks Justplaycards. I didn't know about that contest, even though I was Kickstarter backer. It was my first time backing any playing cards and had no connection with the playing card community until much later.

Based on those challenges, I can categorically say I am completely screwed

I've been a backer since the beginning with Requiem, I don't remember that either! I'm not even going to attempt the room17 quest, it's going to be past 2am when it launches lol and by the time I wake up it might be solved.

Yeah it's true. It's part of the reason Room 17 was delayed. Cartamundi were trying to find them.

Hi all!

I saw the comments, glad you like the deck and the idea of the quest.
I did a quest for Gemini, and I did one for Heretic as well. Actually it looks that Gemini quest was quite complicated if compared to this one.
Maybe this is one is easy, but it will take some time... maybe not.

Now a little clarification about the items.
  • - approx 1000 HRS-Cartomancer decks were sitting "naked" (=no tuckbox) at Cartamundi as overproduced decks.
    - I bought them and I decided to split them in 2 and plan a quest. 500 will be gilded for Room17 variant, the rest just Cartomancer.
    - I ordered the tuckboxes to Lotrek, he printed too many: 680 room17, and 800 cartomancer. Also, I gave him wrong numbers by mistake.
    - At this point I decided to gild 680 decks for room17 variant, the rest just cartomancer.
    - Cartamundi ships cartomancer decks to France because there is where the gilding is done, but when they returned the numbers did not add up. 125 missing.
    - During or after gilding somehow 125 gilded cartomancer were lost, probably shipping.
    - Investigation did bring them back.
    - I decided to sacrifice 125 cartomancer and send 125 to gilding, that's why it took ages to complete this production. Seals were alredy produced and applied.
    - At the end for unknown reasons to me, the final count consists in 650 room17, and the rest is cartomancer.
    - Faro was still in stock at GW and I suspended the sales for this event.
    - 100 card guards in silver were ordered this summer for the reason above.
    - Uncut sheets cartomancer are sold out. These will not be back unless a reprint of Cartomancer variant.
That's the story
A lot of losses and wasted money :(

BTW the deck goes for $45, same as Parlour Dynastinae kickstarter price, I thought it made sense. It is a bit seep, but you do need a brick, do you?
:)
Cheers

Yeah, more than a couple seems like overkill. It's just a gilded version of an existing deck with a nicer tuck box. Splurge on the decks you'll actually use, I say.
