Completionism
Completionists out there - why?
Where do you draw the line? I'm curious to hear your takes on this.

Re: Completionism
You want us to explain compulsion to you?
In all seriousness, I do thing it ranks up there as an OCD type issue. I tend to get cured when people put out far too many obscure variants. For example, I used to be a KWP completionist but it's impossible any more so I gave up.

Re: Completionism
I would like to own every deck Lorenzo has designed, does that make me a completionist or just a fan? In my humble opinion, owning everything from an artist whose work I really enjoy is just my way of supporting his work so that he may it long continue. I am even a patreon.
I would never say to a Queen fan (for example), so you have all their records, what's that all about.
In fact is completionist even a word?

Re: Completionism
A completionist doesn't necessarily have to be a fan, and the reverse is also not a requirement. For you the drive to complete the set comes from being a fan, but that is not the case for everyone. Some collectors just strive to have everything of a particular theme, for myriad reasons. But for them the important part is having the full set. I would consider that collector a completionist, where the goal is having a complete set. For Lorenzo, you are a completionist, because your goal is to complete the set, regardless of whether it is a compulsion to own everything or a desire just to support the creator by owning everything. I consider myself to be a large fan of Lorenzo's work, they are my favorite designer, they have made my favorite decks, and some of my most cherished decks in my collection are S17 decks. But I do not like all of their work, and I don't feel the need/desire to own all of their work. A fan, but not a completionist. Although from a perspective of supporting/patroning an artist, unless you bought everything from that artist, having a complete set does not support them. Again only if you have to fill gaps in the collection through the resale market.justplaycards wrote:I would like to own every deck Lorenzo has designed, does that make me a completionist or just a fan? I think it's more like a Queen fan owning every pressing, every format, re-releases, etc. of every album - just looking on Discogs, for example, there are over 300 versions of A Night At The Opera and about 150 separate single/EP releasesjustplaycards wrote:I would never say to a Queen fan (for example), so you have all their records, what's that all about.

Re: Completionism
I don't know about completionists. I am more of an extinctionist! Get them ALL!
I do think with as many cards out there, it is helpful to specialize in some kind of way. Simply getting every deck ever made is just not going to work. As folks have pointed out, even going for all Kings Wild Project decks would be a huge undertaking in itself, as is all of Lotrek's decks. Even Gio has some really rare pieces. Some collectors just go for the hard stuff, some just the easy stuff.
A collection is whatever the collector wants to make of it, and each has their own unique take on what is complete.

Re: Completionism
That's a good analogy and I think sums it up pretty well, and yes it is a word, as is tuckist, doesn't have to be in the dictionary to be a word lol.justplaycards wrote:I would never say to a Queen fan (for example), so you have all their records, what's that all about.

I'm definitely not a completionist, before the last couple of years I always had a soft rule of only backing for one deck from a campaign for budgetary reasons, with rare exceptions for some Thirdway/S17 projects. But then I ended up with a lot of decks from my favourite designers, and reached the point where they had to be stored separately so I thought, wouldn't it be cool just to take that extra step and complete it since it's already so close? Particularly because I want to eventually display them together. So I set out some rules for what I consider complete. Thirdway was simple, and I'm still working on Lotrek, not even half-way on S17. Liking near enough all their work makes it easier! There's nothing else I would consider trying to complete.

Re: Completionism
I changed from a KWP completionist to a Jackson Robinson Kickstarter completionist. I don't really care for any of his subscription decks, although they are well-done. I am at peace with missing out on those.Strag wrote:You want us to explain compulsion to you?

I also don't collect his in-between-er decks. For example, I have the Scarlett Tally-Ho Gilded and Display decks. I don't need the XXX/700, because the Display Edition already has those cards and the Gilded already has that tuck. I don't need every variant (I hate variants, anyways).

Re: Completionism
A playing card "completionist" is kind of like a comic book "run collector". Guys who collect all of Superman Vol. 1 #1-400, etc, instead of just "key" books like first appearances.
I'm a completist for very few artists. JR less subscriptions, Encarded less Deco, Alex Chin less NPCCD, Lorenzo, Giovanni's first 15 or so decks... TBH I don't think I have a truly complete set of anyone's works, since I think there's an obscure Lorenzo deck out there that I don't own.

No, I don't have any of the prototypes. Spectre did sell a Gran Riserva last month, I hesitated and missed it though. I kind of based my collection on Lorenzo's Heritage photo. https://www.instagram.com/p/BrW-hM0hykF/Justin O. wrote:You have a Lux AND Noctis Gran Riserva!? I am so jealous...

Re: Completionism
The NetEnt deck was made as a giveaway for clients of Net Entertainment (Swedish based online casino). If memory serves, only a thousand were printed. Lorenzo directed the project and designed the tuck and a few of the cards.theCapraAegagrus wrote:That's the one. Re: Completionism
That picture is definitely missing some. The Requiem Gran Riserva, any of the Heretic Gran Riservas. I suspect he didn't keep any of those for himself which is why he didn't include them. But I completely understand trying to save your wallet by not including everything. Especially for those specifically which are harder to get even than the NetEnt deck.justplaycards wrote: No, I don't have any of the prototypes. Re: Completionism
I don't remember Spectre offering a Gran Reserva. I knew he was looking for a Heretic Lux Gran Reserva (which I think he has found). I actually did buy a Heretic Noctis Private Reserve from Spectre recently (Thanks BTW). I do have a Heretic Lux Gran Reserva finally from adamosu here not too long ago. None of those are cheap. Those are decks that you are best to just close your eyes and buy when you get the chance if you really want them. Don't even go after them unless you want to spend a lot of money. That is just one reason why I don't have white whales anymore. If I find something I really want on sale, I'll be happy and go after it, but I don't go hunting for stuff really. It works for me at least.

I believe this is a deck that Lorenzo made up by hand for some ebay? Scammer or someone that was trying to get a free deck with some shoddy story.Justin O. wrote:

I think it was in a post here somewhere or maybe on insta. I think it was like a ruined deck that he drew on with marker and made a marker drawn fu scammer tuck.

I forgot about the Scam deck. That was a silly one-off deck. If you include that in Stockholm's cannon for a must have for your collection...well you better already have it in your collection as someone won it at auction.
As for the deck, here you go. As you can tell, Lorenzo was a bit raw regarding folks trying to scam him for free decks...

It was a great story though with a happy ending. Respect to Timmargh for the idea.
Bradius you are of course correct, it was a Heretic Noctis Private Reserve. Not a Gran Riserva. I am old, forgive me

Re: Completionism
I started out considering I'd follow a certain way of thinking and it's remained. Only buying decks I plan to use. (at some point)
So I drew the line just there.
When that caveat of, at some point, took hold. I decided I'd go by series not by artist overall.
I moved the line.
When that didn't work out and I started to go by artist toward completionistic collecting method.
I moved the line.
When that didn't work out either because I insanely went further than that and started to completionist from smaller card companies, EPCC LPCC even considered CPC etc. New releases at this point. I'd already self banned myself from ebay long before this but yea...
I moved the line again.
And did I move the line again after that? Of course I did!
Why though, why would you do that Fess? Because I am not very smart and quite possibly a little touched in the head. That's why.
I recognized my problem. I chose to do something about it and I erased the line entirely.
I quit putting pressures on my collection and simply let it whatever it becomes without the insanity. A hobby to enjoy, not a hobby to stress over. I used decks from it and give some away because it makes me smile to do so and maybe starts someone in the hobby. I now intentionally do NOT buy every deck I see and like. I intentionally MISS OUT on certain decks and I don't jump through hoops anymore either. I find I'm much happier overall, my collection is not any less because of it. In fact I would argue it's more because of what's missing from it in terms of completionism and the ditching of that aspect of collecting. Shnazzy looking brick box! ZOMG! I feel that tingle of MUST HAVE! So I don't do it.
I like me a lot more this way and I love my collection every bit as much as I ever have.
