To be honest, yesterday Jerry's was a hype deck for cardistry, and today this is a hype deck for magic, plus the fact that one deck is so pricey, I'm not even mad haha!

I agree. Still, I won't fall for the JN hype but I'm gonna grab a pair of Butterfly's just to finally see the famous marking system. :)

I think he's referring to the prototypes that were released in limited quantity in April. Half of those decks were gilded, but not made available to the public until now. All of the 'standard' decks in this campaign are gilded, yes.

I got the gold and silver foil prototypes earlier. I don't need the gilded anywhere close to that badly. I might stay in for a pair, but not all four types. I'm kind of on the fence on this one.

I've thought a lot about this, too. When I asked USPCC about it, they said that the quality of the decks could suffer:
Decks without cello are exposed to moisture during shipping and have a higher risk of warping and clumping out of the tuck box. Expect a 10% loss of decks due to this.
-Tiffany at USPCC
Considering the summer humidity... these could turn out pretty bad :?

Actually, since the decks are gilded, there is much less likelihood the cards being affected by moisture since the gilding seals the edges of the decks, which was originally why books and cards were gilded. ;)

Hi everyone, as the Kickstarter campaign enters its last 10 days, I am here to answer any and all questions you might have about it.
Here are some answers, comments, and thank yous for the ones already posed:
Decknowledgy wrote:To be honest, yesterday Jerry's was a hype deck for cardistry, and today this is a hype deck for magic, plus the fact that one deck is so pricey, I'm not even mad haha!
I understand :) on the other hand I would insist on the fact that the hype around the butterfly cards hasn't been created artificially but mainly through their real possibilities. I also do my absolute best to make them as high quality as possible, because I care greatly about these cards and use them every day myself.

Regarding the price, you are right. Jirs from Cartamundi told me that this deck has the most special printing techniques he's ever worked on. I am unable to even print this deck for some of the prices that the Jerrys are for.
KT52 wrote:What is the difference between the prototypes and the regular decks??
The cards will be identical to the gilded prototypes. The box will have a different pattern on the inside, printed in a different technique. They won't be wrapped in a cellophane but in an acid free recycled paper from a FSC source.
shiroo56 wrote:that is a bit counter-productive then, since UV-inks are polymers. :geek:
Thank you so much shiroo56 for pointing this out. I wasn't aware. I talked to the factory and we are looking into using a different printing technique for the inside of the tuck case.
_

Please visit the Kickstarter page, see the fun video (we had some awesome time filming it), have a look around and then come back and ask me as many questions as you want.
I'll be checking this forum regularly and try to answer promptly.

All my very best,
Ondrej

Please more details, if possible. What does it mean "the most special printing technique"? As far as I know, they offer cold foil for more than one year already. Is there anything we should know about changes in the printing process, which makes it special?

Thank you for the question! I don't think I've listed them yet anywhere.

What I mean by that is that the cards have:
cold foil on the backs
cold foil on the faces
gilding
precision cutting (these cards have their own cutting procedure called butterfly procedure - not kidding)

the tuck case has:
hot stamping
embossing
inner printing in thermochromic ink (on the prototypes - different technique in the big run)
numbered custom stamp/not numbered for non-kickstarter customers
protective paper wrap for all of the decks

the amount of things that can be messed up on this deck brings me nightmares - especially when I list them like this :? - but the factory is holding special production meetings just to make sure that everyone is on the same page regarding printing these cards in the best possible way.

Thank you, Ondrej!

One last question - what is a reason to use thermochromic inks to print inside of the box? The temperature is constant there. It's actually a good idea to use such inks on cards... :ugthink: We should try it.
If you have anything to share about cutting, please do it.

Thanks and good luck!

I had a an idea of a magic reveal when the symbols of the Ace of Hearts fade in view when you place your first finger under the flap of the box to support it. Unfortunately the thermochromic ink doesn't turn transparent (as it did when printed on a white background) but grey/white so it doesn't work and needs more development to be usable. - I don't know if you are familiar with the thermochromic effect that is on the second edition decks. I've never advertised it anywhere. It's just there for people to discover. That one works as it's on white.
montenzi wrote:If you have anything to share about cutting, please do it.
As you know, USPCC have historical problems with registration of the edges. That's why they can't print my cards. My marking system requires cards to be cut with a 0,5 mm tolerance. Taiwan could do it, but they can't guarantee it. Cartamundi has a cutting machine... it's butch cut... that has a camera quality control that stops the machine when there is a single card that is off-cut for more than 0,4 mm registration. And that's why I am so happy about the acquisition. Because now they will be able to share technology. And learn from each other.

Very true! I remember your deck was the first custom deck printed by Cartamundi where this technology was explained to the public. You made a lot to promote Cartamundi  Big respect from me!!!

Thank you so much, Montenzi. They are very nice to me and go beyond their duty and even current possibilities to make my cards as good as possible. The no plastic action will be their first time as well. But you know, it had to happen eventually anyway. So it might as well happen much earlier than planned. :D

So glad you're here, Ondrej and sharing all these little behind the scenes nuggets, especially about the 2nd ed decks. (Curse you for making me spend more $! I have the 1st ed and supporting the Black set )

Not only have you pushed the boundries of what can be done with a marked deck, you've also pushed the boundaries of how Cartamundi prints cards! That's real magic! :ugdance:

Thank you so much, Eric! Some of the first editions have the thermo ink as well. Basically if you have a deck that came wrapped in Tyvek, you have a deck with a thermochromic butterfly.

Pushing boundaries with Cartamundi is not that difficult in my case. They see that all I strive for is the highest possible quality and customer satisfaction. And they strive for the same thing. So again - taking USPCC from that other company that had zillion other things than playing cards to worry about and putting it in the hands of Cartamundi is a huge win for playing cards industry.

Hi hawk199,

I don't have a detailed answer to your question. I have intended to visit the French gilding factory. In the past 6 months I asked several times through Cartamundi for a date when I can come and see the process, but I am yet to hear back. Sometimes the stars just don't align for some time. Why it's better than the gilded decks you are used to is, because they are made in a different factory. All gilded decks coming from USPCC that I 've held were more or less for decorative purposes only. I don't know where they outsource their gilding from.

But unfortunately I don't know the specifics. Yet.
