**FEEDBACK NEEDED - Cyberpunk themed deck
Hello all, I just started a company with a designer that I know and we are working on our first Kickstarter (first for me, he has done others before). It is a project of a cyberpunk-themed deck and I wanted to know about your thoughts. We think this theme is very popular now (with cyberpunk 2077 game, a lot of tv shows and movies). The concept would be something like this deck but 3d modeled.

We are also discussing having personas for the Jack, Queen, King, or just have it more abstract. Please tell me your thoughts on it. Thank all of you in advance.

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
When you say 3D modelled, surely you don't mean like this kickstarter project? Just one example of a few over the years, all of which were awful and obviously bad models.

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
I'm pretty open to anything. That said, I've never seen a 3D-rendered style deck that blew me away or even just mildly interested me.
For example just lately this tarot deck started on kickstarter. I really dig the pictures and the choosen dark theme, but even if this tarot deck was only $15, I wouldn't buy it because the rendering style throw me off immediatly.
It will be a hard task to make a 3D rendered deck that will look awesome. But you are always free to proof me wrong.
Same goes by the way for Steam-, Cyber-, Tesla- and whatever-punk themed decks. I really love that theme in Manga, Animes and literature, but the majority of decks with this theme are just rubbish and you really have to nail it for me to get into my wallet.

+1. I think 3D models/graphics just don't translate well onto the playing card medium. Also, most playing card collectors/enthusiasts are probably used to more traditional art styles, at least on their decks.shiroo56 wrote:I'm pretty open to anything. A big no to 3D renders on playing cards, it gives a very cheap look.

I dream of a world where wars are fought only by having dance offs. I also dream that a Finnish playing card designer would exist. The former seems more likely to happend.

My Imperial Decks were all 3D, and I think they turned out pretty cool looking!Räpylätassu wrote:A big no to 3D renders on playing cards, it gives a very cheap look.

I do agree that 3D is not good for people on Cards. It usually only works for Cards when Modelling and Rendering innanament objects. 3D characters need animation to help sell their look, I think.
Thanks, Randy

I'm mostly on Roope's side on this one (I like good (as in pinacle of what is possible at the time) CGI movies though, e.g. Final Fantasy). Cards and 3D does almost never fit, and I only write almost because I never say never. For me the deck that proofs me wrong has yet still to come.

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
Hey Excelsior Cards,
I think there’s 2 main points to consider when choosing a Deck theme and medium:
(1) - will the designer / artist enjoy working with the theme and style enough to finish it?
(2) - do you think there will be enough Backers / customers to justify the hard work and time put into the design (and 3D Modelling, Rendering and Cleanup is a LOT of work)?
Beyond that, everything else is just background noise (including critiques on UC). Some of the most popular designs are Decks that UC users hate - just look at the current Jerry Nuggets project, and the ton of Cardistry Decks.
8,500 Imperial Decks were Printed and SOLD (5,000 Red, 2,500 Bicycle Black and 1,000 Gold). I had a blast creating the designs also. So in the end, the Imperial Decks were a complete success in my book!
Unique themes are always risky with Playing Cards, but I’m not afraid to focus on odd themes. Hell, I even did a few Bowling Decks, and a design that focused solely on this Forum (which also started a long tradition of Annual UC Decks)!
You’re already a step ahead with the theme. Cyberpunk looks to be a popular theme with the Kickstarter crowd. As long as the execution is done well, I think you’ll do fine.
Thanks, Randy

I am sorry for my delay on answering Adonael, no not at all, this is a bad project lol. I meant something like this:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/el ... erm=evolve
I don´t think that organic 3d modeled is very good on cards (at list I haven´t seen one good out there).
I will post below one of the latest render

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
Hi shiroo56, thank you for replying. I agree with you, I liked a lot the goetia project, but it is "organic" 3d modeling, as I said on the reply above, it seems weird on cards, what I had in mind was something like the evolve deck (http://kck.st/2L0mVdC), but without gears and etc that make it look steampunk. I am sharing down below the last render.shiroo56 wrote:I'm pretty open to anything. That said, I've never seen a 3D-rendered style deck that blew me away or even just mildly interested me.

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
Thank you MagikFingerz for your thoughts. I´ve seen some good 3d modeled that are going well on kickstarter but I confess they are rare. I believe it depends on how you manage the campaing, the campaing that I mentioned (Evolve) made it look very luxurious and was 700% funded.MagikFingerz wrote:+1. Thanks for your thoughts Räpylätassu. I believe they are starting to grow, and as everything, in the beginning we see a lot of bad designs but there is space to improve.

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
Thank you so much for your contribution RandyButterfield. I have the same opinion, so my project is "inorganic based", indeed 3d characters need animation to sell. Good job on your work. I believe that 3d modeled cards have space to grow, just need a good art and go to the right audience. My inspiration was this deck: http://kck.st/2L0mVdC, I believe it is a good one and had a very successful campaign.RandyButterfield wrote:My Imperial Decks were all 3D, and I think they turned out pretty cool looking!Räpylätassu wrote:A big no to 3D renders on playing cards, it gives a very cheap look.

About your points:
(1) - will the designer / artist enjoy working with the theme and style enough to finish it?
Yes, so far the designer is committed to finish the work and is working hard on it. He enjoys the theme and has designed other decks with similar aesthetic
(2) - do you think there will be enough Backers / customers to justify the hard work and time put into the design (and 3D Modelling, Rendering and Cleanup is a LOT of work)?
So far I believe it will, cyberpunk is a theme that I love and recently we had a lot of it (through movies, netflix, 2077 coming soon, etc.) so I think now is a good timing for it and it might have enough backers depending on how I manage the campaign

Re: Cyberpunk themed deck
For some reason when I think cyber punk, I think of something much more gritty than the above tuck render which seem more clean like Tron.
I don't not like the render but I would definitely need to see more.

Updates: Finished the tuck box (still subject to changes), some Aces, and a mock-up for Jack, King and one of the jokers (please note they are just drafts).

*Question: Do y´all think that withe borders make it look bad or cheap? I thought of left white borders as one of the classic features instead of putting neon or another color.
