I honestly don't think it's special enough to even be hated. It has no depth of flavor, and the coconut glaze that serves as icing doesn't do anything for it except contribute a vaguely unpleasant texture. It tastes like a spice cake designed by committee for an Episcopalian church picnic.BaconWise wrote:I couldn't agree more. You're 9000% right that Carrot is a "scrub tier" cake.
Ben & Jerry's used to have a Red Velvet ice cream that was pretty good. On their website, it looks like they still make it, but I haven't seen it in Michigan for about a year or two.

That's like pointing out calamari tastes much better than raw squid. No kidding. Pieing, like frying, improves the flavor of most foods. But it can't make apples taste better than cherries.TwoPiece wrote:By themselves, yeah. In a pie? That's taking a "bad fruit" from zero to hero, bro.Merlebird wrote:Apples are just a bad fruit. I forgot to specifically mention angel food cake, possibly because I confused it with fiberglass insulating foam. It should properly come at the start of the list of scrub-tier cakes. I regret the error.

Yes.Merlebird wrote:For me the matchup depends on the specific kinds of cake and pie involved and the mood I'm in. I agree that people often put way too much icing on cake and I usually end up scraping most of it off (unless it's cream cheese icing).

Oh, HELL yes. Cheesecake holds a special place in my heart. I used to make these simple mini-cheesecakes.PipChick wrote:ummm... where does cheesecake fall... is it really a cake??? I'm hungry and confused... sos
Picture this: Oreo cookies (minus the filling). Chop it up and lay down a thin base layer in the bottom of mini cupcake cups. Cheesecake batter as second layer. Top it off with mashed up strawberries or raspberry jam. Bake it. Devour it.

Re: Last person to post wins. . . . .
In my opinion, if it has a "crumb" - that is, a texture similar to bread's - and it's made with grain flour, it's a cake. So Japanese-style steamed cheesecake is cake, but Neufchâtel- or ricotta-based confections are not. (In Japan I would always see packaging refer to the latter as "rare cheese," to drive home the distinction.) That's just how I think of it, though.PipChick wrote:ummm... where does cheesecake fall... is it really a cake??? I'm hungry and confused... sos
If we're considering cheesecake a type of cake for the purposes of this discussion, then it's definitely a top-tier cake. Different flavors of cheesecake rank differently, though.

Re: Last person to post wins. . . . .
A truly top-tier fruit pie filling will be slightly tart, the better to counterbalance the buttery heaviness of the crust and keep the overall dessert from becoming too cloying. But even fresh blueberries don't have much tartness to them, and once cooked or dried they're more sugar than flavor. They can perform an excellent supporting role for other fruits by contributing sweetness and color - like in the aforementioned top-tier "mixed berry" pie (which traditionally includes raspberries, blackberries and blueberries), or in blueberry-lemon cheesecake - but they can't carry a dish on their own.shiroo56 wrote:So far, I had agreed to 99.9 % with all the stuff I've seen Merlebird writing in this forum but this...Merlebird wrote:Apples are just a bad fruit. Blueberries are also chronically overused in cheap, poorly-made sweets, particularly in the breakfast category. I ate a lot of lousy boxed-mix blueberry muffins growing up, so I'm always going to associate them with that. Your mileage may vary there, though.

That's why people are generally discouraged from posting multiple times in a row on a given thread. Wait for someone to respond before you add more to the conversation. For example, like now.
