You made the following statement: "Despite Expert's very long established history of printing their own decks, which they do abroad in their Taiwan and Chinese facilities..." So EPCC's "very long established history" is all of about 6 years only. They were not in existence prior to 2013 and their first deck, Global Titans, were released in July of 2013. For point of reference, the USPCC probably have printed more decks last month than EPCC has printed in their entire existence. They do not own the Taiwanese or Chinese printers, either, they merely contract with them to print their decks, just like Hanson Chien or you and I can.

The French magician who bought up most of the remaining stock of JN decks back in the 1990's is Dominique Duvivier.

Any modern USPCC deck should handle better than a deck of JNs, even one out of a freshly opened box. JNs are close to half a century old after all, and they're only finished on one side. The fact that they handle as well as they do for being such an old, vintage deck is a testament to the quality of the deck in general, and the special thin, yet stiff card stock is one of the most durable stocks ever make. Dan Buck's JN is extremely worn and he's been probably using that deck over the past 10 years, and it's still usable.
I've got a low-paying (aka no paying :D) fact checker position available. You in? :D

"Very long" is completely relative, I'll have you know! Who's to say what timescale I was on? A dog's? A snail?

And I should have said "in taiwan and chinese" rather than "in their"

Jerry’s Nugget Pre-Kickstarter Update No. 1

June 6, 2019

Your Questions Answered

We are receiving a lot of questions about our upcoming Kickstarter and we’ll do our best to answer all of them. Be sure to check back later for more updates!

Are the decks Printed already?
– Nope! We did go to great trouble and expense to make a few PREVIEW decks but these are not the production decks.

Are these a limited edition?
– Yes…and no. We will print what we need for distribution of the KS and other orders once the campaign concludes. The tucks will be marked to identify this production run so that they can’t be confused with either the original decks, the preview decks, or any other version that may be printed in the future. Once this run is printed, we will not make any more that are exactly like this again.

What is the point if they aren’t identical with the originals?
– In the 50 years that the originals have been around they have become Iconic, but they have also become very collectible and expensive. This production serves two purposes. One, to bring the feel up to date for today’s tastes (they will be Thin Crushed), and to make them affordable enough for everyday use.

How much will the basic version cost?
– Not expensive! The main goal of this project is to get these cards into everyone’s hands and let everyone experience (and use) Authentic Jerry’s! The official retail price will be $12 per deck (this applies to the main versions – red and blue, thin crushed), and will have a special, discounted price on Kickstarter. Other versions for the Kickstarter will be announced later and will have different pricing.

Will there be any early bird specials?
– Oh yeah. You definitely want to be there first…

I get that some will feel these are pointless since they won't/can't be identical to the original JNs, but at this price point I think they're worth getting so kudos to Kalush for pricing them reasonably.

I don't like how he answered the question of whether these will be limited.

Are these a limited edition?
Yes…and no. We will print what we need for distribution of the KS and other orders once the campaign concludes. The tucks will be marked to identify this production run so that they can’t be confused with either the original decks, the preview decks, or any other version that may be printed in the future. Once this run is printed, we will not make any more that are exactly like this again.

Just admit the truth and say, "I paid a butt load to get the license to print these from Jerry's Nugget Casino so I'm going to print as many as I can for as long as I can until the market for these are completely exhausted." The preview editions will be negligibly different from the KS print run, with the only difference probably being minor verbiage on the bottom of the tuck, and the unlimited print run after the KS campaign will be negligibly different from the KS run. There will be plenty of replica JNs available for a long time after this KS campaign, and you can be sure to see multiple re-colors as well - black, green, yellow JNs, anyone?

I am fine with the concept and project to reprint this deck. The more I research Jerry’s Nuggets, the more I consider this a hype deck, and reprint deck(s), even more so. It is not a bad thing, but just not interesting to me. There are some interesting stories on this deck.

Jaspas did an awesome job comparing the vintage JNs to the reprint JNs. I love how he did the audio comparison of the snap and spring of the two stocks, they sound completely different and it's obvious how stiff and snappy the original JNs still are. The only thing I wish he did was to compare the thickness of the cards by stacking 52 cards side by side. The original JNs are 50 years old, and Jaspas' deck has been open and used for three years now so it's expected that his cards have expanded and warped a bit, but I bet they would still be thinner than the brand new reprint deck. There's nothing like the thin, stiff stock of JNs today, you either have decks as stiff, but too thick, or decks as thin, but too soft. The only modern deck that comes even remotely close in terms of stock would be the Absolut Vodka deck, which is another deck that extremely thin yet stiff.

Anyways, the detailed comparison of differences is exactly the kind of thing collector's want to know, so congrats to Jaspas on a great video and thanks for posting, Azid.

I’ve got to agree to that this is nothing spectacular. Which is why they went to all the trouble to print prototype decks and send them out our favorite reviewers to start the hype machine.
Yes, this gets Nuggets in the hands of people who would not be able to afford them otherwise. Or, to appease those can’t bring themselves to open an original deck after paying $300-$500 for one.
It has been said by many that this will be printed on the USPCC’s web press. I don’t know firsthand about the USPCC’s business model. But, working for a large commercial printer I can tell you that a web press is not used for small runs. It does allow for tighter registrations. But, it’s not saved merely for the best print quality. Generally, it’s a machine that you have to feed long runs, to make it worthy of turning on. If we had some specifics about how many decks will be printed then I would believe that they’re only using the press for quality reasons. Either way somebody’s got to pay for the press time. If the decks aren’t expensive, dollars to donuts there’s a high volume on order.

The minimum print quantity for the web press is 23K, so there will be at least that many JNs printed

Is it that high, Sherman? I thought 15K was the minimum to spin up the roll fed Frenchy as opposed to the German made (usually sheet fed) Heidelberg or similar.

I didn't find a YouTube link to show it at full steam, but it is an incredible beast!

Whether or not you believe that Lee created the phenomenon, the old ones will not be as popular once the reprint is available - IMHBUCO. I have a couple of the preview sets and those likely will be a tough get.

That is going to be interesting. They try to build hype for the regular sets, but the preview sets are likely to have the resale value, not the main release...another reason to sit back. Growing up in Texas, I am not really impressed by oil derricks...unless they are on my land.

I am not 100%, but I do know that Chris Brown of Orbit printed 23K of the Orbit 4 deck on the web press and assumed that was the minimum. Maybe someone who has printed with USPCC before can verify.

Yup....it is 23k per my understanding as well. USPCC is known to give certain discounts or concessions to repeat customers and it is possible a few might have got a deal of printing a lower print run than 23k through web press.

Interesting. I will go out on a limb and say maybe it used to be 15k? 23,000 is a lot of decks compared to the usual custom run of 1000 or so.

What is the advantage of running on the web press? Does it reduce your cost per deck? Better quality? Just curious as to the advantages?

Yes, the cost is reduced considerably. Web press is faster because of the automation. That said, I can't say about the quality because you still find the registration issues on decks done through web press.

So, the quality is about the same, but it is a lot cheaper to produce each deck. Which means either this deck will be selling really cheap, or the producer will be making a ton on each deck they sell....no real rarity either. I don't like the design...not rare....cheap to produce the cards...yeah, I let the rest of you all take these. I'll go lock up the vault and go to bed. Night all.

In the pre-Erlanger days, there was more of a quality difference between the sheet fed press and the web press than there is now. Nowadays the difference is more of an economy of scale.

Orders below 15-20k decks (I forget the exact quantity offhand) will default to the sheet-fed press, whereas orders of 15-20k or more will default to the web press.

The biggest difference is not so much quality, but time. The web press prints faster, and also does the slotting and embossing on the same machine, whereas that is an extra step for sheet-fed runs, hence even more time.

Decks from either press go to the same finishing lines for final punching, insertion into tucks, cello wrapping, etc. So there is no difference in the likelihood of precise registration of the borders on either press, etc.

I have done at good 12+ deck runs per year for the past decade on both presses, and find the quality to be quite comparable, especially in recent years.
