PARAMOUR PLAYING CARDS
Hi all,
So here is something i've been working on:
I know this won't be to everyone's taste but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Simon

Re: Thoughts!
It is not my thing, but the banner needs to be symmetrical. I also suggest shifting her more diagonally to fill in some of the white space on the other side across from the pips.

Re: Thoughts!
The actual artwork is rather nice. Too much white space in the card however.

Re: Thoughts!
Rather than making the bottom a "mirror" image of the top, I suggest making the bottom the exact same image as the top, only upside-down. As mentioned above, make the ribbon similarly two-way to completed the effect. Also, enlarge the image to make it more prominent and to shrink the white space.
It's a nice look. What are you going for, thematically?

Re: Thoughts!
wow, Simon - I didn't know you were so creative and thank you for sharing your work with us.
+1 to what Rousselle said - don't mirror the image; rotate it 180 degrees so that it'll be two-way.
and +1 to finding a way to fill that extra white space; if not by enlarging/modifying the dimensions of the actual image itself (which is probably the easiest "fix"), perhaps try adding a subtle background motif or frame-like design. You could also try filling the space by angling the image; however, this probably would require the most work and possibly a complete re-work of the image itself as to not look awkward like she's standing on a tilt lol
Also, the red rose she's holding - being such a similar shade of red - seems to kinda blend in with the red color of her hair; maybe try a different color and/or shade... I think a white rose could fit well so it doesn't get lost in the design and because white is often used as a sign of innocence - and with the queen looking so young, might be a great symbol to match with her appearance and possibly be used to allude to a deeper story behind the character - just something that I noticed and maybe worth considering.
Thanks again for sharing and I'd also love to hear more about your theme & concept as it would help us provide better and more relevant feedback for you to work off of - can't wait to see more and best of luck in the process of developing this deck and it's designs

+1 to everyone's suggestions, but I just wanted to say the artwork itself is super appealing to me. Not a style we've seen in a while and if the other courts are this comely and clean, you'd have a winner on your hands.

Re: Thoughts!
Hi All,
Thanks for the feedback so far.
I have purposely been on radio silence with this until I had something else to show and seeing as it's Valentine's day I figured this would be a good time to reveal the Queen of Hearts:

I was aware the white space would be an issue - I will decide how to fill this at a later date once all the court cards are done.Räpylätassu wrote:The actual artwork is rather nice. Too much white space in the card however.
The font can be changed no problem I will review this for certain.RichK wrote:Got a classier font? Is it the same red as one part of the diamond?
I'm not. I had these images created for me ( I have little to no artistic skills myself)PipChick wrote:I didn't know you were so creative and thank you for sharing your work with us.

Another nice illo! Two redheads—will everyone be ginger? That middle ribbon still needs to be symmetrical, but the image reversal looks good.

The banner is still not symmetrical but these are nice! I agree with the other comments on whitespace.

Re: Thoughts!
I'm going to have to disagree with others about the whitespace. I think there's a good balance already. Maybe move the corner pips closer to the edge of the card, looks like where they are currently you'll have to fan/spread the cards a bit further than normal to see the corner pips.
Definitely make the middle banner symmetrical though. And if you think there's too much white space, I'd suggest making the banner longer and add some more stars or other mystical effect around it.
Good start.

Re: Thoughts - Deck Name Needed!
Here's the next card - The Jack of Hearts:
I've asked my designer if they can amend the banners to make them symmetrical so hopefully this will be fixed soon.
In the meantime I'm trying to find a suitable name for the deck - Any suggestions??
Anyone who suggests a name and we decide to use it will win a prize (Don't know what this will be yet)

Re: Thoughts! - Name this Deck!
I like the design more and more the longer I look at it. Assuming you've removed the pink border entirely now? It was there on your original card.
I feel like a different background color would go a long way. It might be a way to fill out some of the empty space pretty simply. I'm also not a huge fan of the diamond-sparkles around the courts. It's a bit distracting to the overall image to me. And I'd also potentially (in addition to making it symmetrical) consider extending the banner a bit wider to go a few centimeters past the edge of the character.
Love the style of the artwork, though. Especially the QoH one. Are the black court cards using a different color scheme for the outfits?

The pink border on the first card was a template I used to help with image size, it won't be on the final product.
Banners are in the process of being amended.
The "Black" Court cards will be using a different colour scheme but they won't be black

Don't let the name consist out of just one or two words like with most decks, give it a long name
Example 1: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Example 2: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Example 3: OrangeYouGlad's Dastardly Deck for Deals with the Devil

I didn't actually discuss any particular theme with my artists, I allowed her free reign when designing these, the only real input I gave was to include specific elements such as the feather for the JoH, the flowers for the Queens and the Weapons of choice for each of the Court Cards.
I like the idea Roope, just not sure if it will fit with the theme.Räpylätassu wrote:Don't let the name consist out of just one or two words like with most decks, give it a long name

Hi All,
Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
As you will see we have now settled on a name = Paramour playing cards.
I'm still waiting on some updated court cards to show you more but in the meantime here is our Ace of Spades,
Which colour scheme do you prefer?

to go better with the courts if that makes sense. Either way

I prefer the first one, but it may be that it is in part due to the additional details not present in the second.

I actually prefer B. The details stand out better on the white background, compared to A. The yellow seems to blend with the white background. At least that's what it appears on my screen. After the whole dress colour thing, I now doubt my colour perceptions!
Paramour is a great name for the deck Can't wait to see the black suits and back!

Thanks for your comments and preferences so far.
Just wanted to bump this post and ask for a few more votes on your preferred colour scheme for the Aces.
The back design will be created with a matching colour scheme.

Don't like your "Jacks & Jokers" name. Sounds too much like J&T too me.

Re: PARAMOUR PLAYING CARDS
I like all the color, but it looks like the dimensions are off for poker sized cards, so it is harder to judge. As shown, it has pretty thick borders and I know some people will tell you to make it a truly 2-way design instead of a subtle one-way.
