One of the easiest passes of all-time.
These are awful.
Are they even allowed to use Kickstarter's logo on their tuck box..?

Not sure about the Kickstarter logo, but I give them credit thinking custom mechanics for each and every card.
Not long ago I was just proposing steam punk for Gio.... so yeah, this, I can.

Re: Aristo Steam Punk Playing Cards / Live KS
Is the Dale Mathis deck not "steam punk"? Granted, I don't know - or give a f^&*, about whatever "steam punk" is...
I'm reluctant to use slang, but steam punk sounds really gay... Like, a band of really gay guys in a steam room recording punk rock, kinda gay...

For the record - Green Day is probably the worst band in music history. IIRC, they consider themselves modern punk rock. Is 70's and 80's punk rock any good? Doubt it. Not worth a try IMO.

Re: Aristo Steam Punk Playing Cards / Live KS
There is some exploration of the lifting "punk" is doing in compounds like steampunk, cyberpunk, etc. here, but the upshot is that literary "punk" genres tend to focus on the lower-class, scrappy outsiders living on the margins of society - much the same people who developed and popularized punk music, hence the analogy. (You sometimes see the same grimy, earthy sensibility gestured at with terms like "low fantasy," as contrasted with the "high fantasy" of elves and magical kingdoms.)TwoPiece wrote:That's, like, the worst definition of anything I've ever read. I just can't get over how weird and inconsistent those renderings are. That overlay effect or whatever it is, some have unrounded corners, etc.

Re: Aristo Steam Punk Playing Cards / Live KS
Some other steampunk decks just opt for a mechanical tuck or just partial artwork like the Bicycle Steampunk deck, but this one really went full-fledged into each and every card. I don't mind if it's one-way designed, the artwork still looks fascinating and decent.

Thanks folks, for such trenchant and meaningful, well-reasoned criticism.
I now know that these cards are "awful" and "gay". How insightful.
And that punk rock was just "mostly trash" (which is kind of stating the obvious - the clue is in the name, and it was deliberately so).
In what way a deck of cards can have a sexual preference escapes me though... anyone want to jump on that particular grenade for me ?

Some (more) appropriate criticisms:
- Really boring tuck.
- 1-way back design.
- Lack of color.
- Is that a f^&*ing bird..?

Re: Aristo Steam Punk Playing Cards / Live KS
Can't say I disagree about the first 3 points, and I would even add that the courts are underwhelming - somehow LESS impressive than the other cards. Some (more) appropriate criticisms:
- Really boring tuck.
- 1-way back design.
- Lack of color.
- Is that a f^&*ing bird..?
But I really do like the intricate "clockwork" aspect of the (all different) number cards, and the effort that has been put in is commendable. Definitely far from awful...
BTW, yes, it is an effing bird, if you are referring to the first Joker design. In Europe during the plague, doctors wore face masks made up of goggles and shaped like a bird's beak with primitive "air filters" (really just a piece of cloth soaked in perfume) to combat the stench of their patients and in an attempt to prevent infection (which was suspected, incorrectly, to be air-borne). And yes, they were made of leather, but that does not make them a weird gay BDSM fetish... unless, of course, it does.
Can anyone enlighten a poor noob as to what this is about ? What should I be seeing here ? Any and all tutorials, 101's or masterclasses welcome, no matter how condescending. Genuinely... please school me !I just can't get over how weird and inconsistent those renderings are. That overlay effect or whatever it is, some have unrounded corners, etc.

Re: Aristo Steam Punk Playing Cards / Live KS
I just meant how the digital renderings of the cards look, visually. When you want to fund a deck that hasn't been printed yet, you have to digitally "render" them, or draw them, or make some kind of visual representation of how the finished product will (hopefully) look like. I've seen a lot of these done badly, unrounded corners for example are a classic little mistake. But I've never seen this before, where some of them look like a smaller card on top of a larger, completely white card.ALR wrote:I just can't get over how weird and inconsistent those renderings are. Thanks for the explanations and illustrations.
So both issues are with the presentation of a "3D" image derived from "2D" original artwork, not with the original artwork itself ?
I was concerned that the artwork had some fundamental error that I could not recognise (e.g. a square shadow effect being cast by a rounded object), or contravened a printing convention or requirement (e.g. minimum border width) because despite the issues raised in this thread, I still kind of like these cards.
