Not 100% sure, but I think there's a setting in Chrome that, if switched off, doesn't load images on websites.JuFiN wrote:Nomination list is coming along nicely, but I have a request that I didnt want to muddle that thread with. I'mma just post the list that we have thus far here because I don't know if I really wanna add it to the thread (or at least not yet) and I really don't wanna make it it's own thread either.

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
Hey y'all,
great news - the ever amazing Gentleman Wake will be including a little shout out to UC and our DOTY Awards in his upcoming video review that he's working on right now - Woo-hoo! I asked him to include info about the DOTYs such as the open voting dates (which will be from the 20th of January and run until the 20th of February) and that in order to vote, users must be a registered member of the forum.
Now, since it's likely that we'll have viewers of his channel learning of the DOTY awards for the first time ever and maybe even visiting UC for the first time as well, I think we ought to have an "official" Deck of the Year thread in which TGW can directly refer people to that provides extra information/clarification and/or just a general overview of what it's all about.
I know that we already have quite a few threads dedicated to the DOTYs (and all with their various yet equally important purposes - this thread, for example, for specifically providing an open & direct dialogue and opportunity for discussion on literally any and all things relating to the running & managing of the DOTYs) but I feel an "official" thread would be necessary as it would be a direct point of reference for those visiting UC for the first time to learn more about the DOTYs without having to scroll through so much of... well, all of this. So, just like the Nominations thread, I'd like to keep it as uncluttered as possible with just the first post giving some information that I'm sure all of you are already aware of as well as the rules and links for references to this one (for questions/comments/concerns/suggestion), the noms thread (for possible candidates in voting) and the donations thread (for those that also would like to contribute to the prize pool).
I'll be writing up the new "official" thread a bit later and possibly be changing the title of this one to "2018 Deck of the Year Discussion" as to avoid confusion. I've also been talking to a designer friend that could possibly help us out with a promotional graphic but I'll know more in the upcoming days. So, what do y'all think? Is there anything I'm missing that should also be included?? If so, please feel free to let me know your thoughts
Thanks!

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
Hey guys!
So, one of my super-duper amazing friends happens to also be a really talented graphic designer and, since we've been spending a lot of the holidays together this year, I asked her last night if she'd be maybe willing to help us out in creating a little promotional graphic for our DOTYs and she generously agreed. I showed her what we had last year and basically just told her that if she can just simply recreate exactly that for 2018, that alone would be awesome - but, since anything would be better than nothing, told her she has totally free reign on the style of the design and could really just to do whatever she wanted and we'd greatly appreciate it anyways lol. Well, after talking it over only briefly last night, she sent me this today:
like seriously people, how freakin' awesome is that!
Anyways, this was just her first go at it and she said she's thinking of making some changes and will edit the 'VOTING OPENS' part; but for the time being, I think it seems pretty awesome and I couldn't be luckier to have such an amazing friend - I seriously got nuthin' but mad love for that girl lol. Again, this was just the first draft and it's likely some changes may be made, but if you might have any suggestions or think there's something missing, please let me know and I'll pass it on to her. Please keep in mind though, she's doing this for free as a personal favor so, as the saying goes, 'beggars can't be choosers' and it's awesome that's she even agreed to help us out at all.
I know it's not going to be perfect for everyone, but at least it's something that looks professional and can be shared online and through social media to promote the DOTYs and I think she did a really REALLY great job just in this first draft - Hell, it's leaps and bounds better than anything I'd be able to come up with on my own
lol. So, needless to say, I'm super excited. YAY!
Also, I hope everyone's having a very happy holidays and enjoying the time off with friends and family.

I like it. However, I would drop the "UC" in the spade. Take "United Cardists" and brink it to the top and increase the font substantially, and lower the spade. But, I am not a graphical artist by any stretch.

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
hmmm, I'll mention it and see what she thinks; we're meeting up later tonight with friends for a very merry pub-crawl to partake in some good 'ol fashioned hedonistic debauchery in the spirit of the season with other godless heathens & social degeneratesBradius wrote:I like it. So, since there's not really an official symbol or emblem or logo tied to United Cardists and it's brand (or at least one that I'm aware of), I think the idea behind having the spade with 'UC' was to represent a sort of informal logo in which people can easily identify and associate with the 'United Cardists' community. Because we all here usually just refer to 'United Cardists' as simply 'UC' but that reference might not be always instantly understood by others and the public outside of our little crew here. At least that was a bit of the thought behind the design, if that makes sense.
Anyways, thanks for the feedback and I'll see what she's willing to do.

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
It will start later. A few decks are still just getting released, like most of the Elixir decks (except Midnight) and the Planets Neptune and Pluto decks. It also allows us to think over and nominate worthy decks in each category and think over our votes.
Then, we get to crown the royalty of decks!![Ugly King :ugking:](./images/smilies/icon_uglymadking.gif)

I love the trash bin on fire down the river-street. Must have been filmed in Houston during one of our many floods. Extra points for the signs. First it passes a "Detour" Sign, then a "Private Property - Thrift Store Customers Only" sign in the foreground. ![Ugly King :ugking:](./images/smilies/icon_uglymadking.gif)

UC DotY began in 2013 (voted on in 2014), right?

I've located the posts that announced the winners for all of them, except the one for 2012 was posted as a .jpg that got lost during a move of the server, so I'll have to reconstruct that list from the votes that were posted (or look for it in the Wayback Machine archive.)
I'll create a separate thread to post all of these in one single thread.

Hey Furrukh!! Welcome to UC! I'm positive that there were previous DOTY awards... although I don't know where to find them. Maybe one of the UC Vets can help?
I still need to find the original 2012 winners jpg (or, retabulate them, if necessary).

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
nice - it's awesome to have all the past results in one place! way to go, Allan! Thanks!
But, could we maybe call it the 'DOTYs Hall of Fame'? just to avoid the 'all the winners' part of the title from confusing members of thinking that winners have been announced for this year's awards rather than as the archive of past awards
also, perhaps it would fit better in the 'Hall of Fame' section of the Knowledge base - that's where I'm planning to move the nominations & DOTY threads after it's all over but have them where they're at for more visibility![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
I have already PM'ed Amy on this, but thought to bring it up here to discuss listing the actual innovation reason for the Best Innovation award.
That should ensure people vote for the right reason: Innovation and not their fave deck/designer. Brief 1 sentence summary of the innovation itself to go with the deck name should be sufficient. Otherwise, people joining in from TGW's channel and other places may think that HotRS also deserves the Innovation award as well!![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Thanks a ton, I have so many cards to look into for the next few days, I didnt know abt 80% of these. If some of them are still in print I guess they would still be a good choice for the gentleman wake to do a review of it as well

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
Generally TheGentlemanWake does reviews on recently issued decks so subscribers can have a chance to purchase them when possible. Sometimes though he tries to briefly show some of the older work by the same creator. Unfortunately, doing can make for a long video, which he tries to avoid. Magic Orthodoxy though has done deck reviews on many of the decks issued in previous years.
Enders Game also does great deck review posts and often does articles going over all the decks by a particular artist.
There is a whole forum section here devoted to postings if deck reviews. Also, you can word search this website and often find endless discussions on the deck going back to design, Kickstarter campaign, fulfillment and everything.

Re: 2018 'Deck of the Year' Awards: DISCUSSION
I would agree that his approach to deck reviews is different than others. However, others are good and informative as well, if not as entertaining. Magic Orthodoxy tends to go at deck reviews from a magician's perspective, but still provides a solid and valuable review of decks in a polished format. I appreciate both who put considerable time and effort into their reviews for the rest of us.
