Meow Star Playing Cards on KS

I backed, but I might drop. I'm pretty sure the compulsion to back came from all of the promotional photos featuring the cats.

The campaign states that this is BOCOPO attempting to produce a deck "for Life" rather than for cardistry. What perplexes me, is that, I thought cardistry was life?

I think what they meant by a deck made for life vs cardistry is that it'll be modern cut, instead of traditional, and Bicycle stock with "air-cushion" finish, instead of thin-crushed Bee stock. So, in other words, a pack of quality Bicycles with fully custom art. I like the art, so I am in, I also like the feel of Bicycles.

Is TG around? The Japanese subtitle on the tuck (幻想的なロマンチックな族, if I'm reading correctly) seems weird/off to me, but I'm not a native speaker so I could use a second opinion.

The back design is weak even by my standards, and I'm underwhelmed by the AoS, but the court art is cute and the deck is cheap, especially on EB. I'm in for one.

While I absolutely love cats (I'm owned by two lol), I'm not really feline' these designs so much... the back design is just not up to scratch IMO and I'mma have to pass fur meow... lol

I cannot tell what the kanji are, but it doesn't look like gensoteki or zoku, but none of the images are large enough to really see well on my screen. From my extremely rusty Japanese it would translate roughly to "dreamy/fantastic, romantic family." Although the connotations that gensoteki can carry would seem like romantic would be redundant. Then again, this deck maybe wasn't designed by a Japanese speaker at all.

I like the little additions to the pip cards and I like the courts. I agree the back is kind of, meh, but it works well enough.

I'm not a big fan of cats, but I do like these, the back design is a little love-it-or-hate-it, what I don' t really like are the pips actually, after all the soft colours of the rest of it they seem a little harsh but it's a minor issue. That being said, the shipping for me is more than the deck itself so I'll set a reminder and see how I feel in the last 48 hours.

It bothers me that this deck will probably fund but this one didn't. There's no relation between the two, just that I'm not a cat person in any way, shape or form.

well now, if we're bringing up decks we'd much rather have the opportunity of backing instead, add this one to that list - I would LOVE to see this campaign re-launched and it's a damn shame it never was and probably never will...

one of my favorite decks to never be... *sigh*

What I liked about 'em is probably what most here hated: they completely rethought the pips and their structure. Most of the appeal for playing cards for me is seeing how much a designer can innovate within the established formula - four suits of thirteen cards each, four aces, twelve courts - so these were right up my alley. They look like a prop from a sci-fi or alternate-universe urban fantasy. The design stumbled some on execution, but I dug the concept.

I backed these on KS and got my deck this week - as a cat lover I'm happy with them! I also quite like the back design (cat paws!), but one of the extra cards has a completely different back design for some reason??

Here's my surprised face that Bocopo has so many examples of ripped-off artwork

Decknowledgy posted an awesome deck on IG recently called the Wind Up deck. I had no idea it existed and I had no idea this Meow Star deck existed. I love them both! They are quirky and original. After seeing this thread, I am sad this is a Bocopo deck and that they were stealing artwork a year ago (and probably before that).

I noticed a similarity that shows just how unoriginal the Meow Deck pip concept actually is:

I know they are different treatments, but the Wind Up deck was released in late-summer of 2017, then the Meow Star deck was released mid-2018. *shrug* It may be nothing, but it stuck out to me as another "borrowed" idea. Damn but those cat paw backs are cute.

As far as I like to coin Bocopo for all kinds of copyright issues, I have to be honest and think that this is more of imitation, adaptation, and variation. Plagiarism is far more serious because it's direct copying, and many on the post I put up on IG is arguing saying that it's "not a big deal since Ellusionist's Knights are copying Fontaine, some designs are copying Orbits..." blah blah blah. But I've stressed that's a lesser issue because it's an imitation, not a direct copy.

Bocopo could be spared with this deck, but they're doing far worse on the others mentioned in the Luna thread.

I got this deck and it was very cute and adorable even for non cat lovers. It was probably their most original deck series of their recent offerings. (relatively speaking or until proven otherwise)

It begs the question if they can put out 2 original decks like this, why did they need to copy wholesale the other ideas or not even credit the inspiration. It just dragged their name through the mud for something which they may struggle to recover.

Edit: Well then, looks like their main source of creativity is taking other people's ideas and jamming them into a deck of cards without giving credit atll...

So is Snowman Factory, the only deck left which shows any kind of originality? Then again, it was done as a collab with Magic Square. So just waiting for someone to see if that's true or not.
