A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Kickstarter Completed
Another deck has landed on Kickstarter.
It will be printed by USPCC.
I like the look of this deck, and his upfront video.

Wow, $15 per deck and you don't even know who is making them? Who the hell would pledge under those conditions?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Gotcha!! I didn't watch it but $15.00 still seems pretty steep.
Thanks!

I really like the look, but definitely think that $15 is quite pricey.

Excuse moi, but the King of Hearts should be stabbing himself. Not the King of Diamonds. Also, I would like to see the back design. And like Bmpokerworld said, $15 seems pretty expensive, especially with the goal only being $6,250. Just my two cents.

Let's see: Very obvious one-way back, virtually no color, boring spot cards, $15 per deck + $7 international shipping...
No thanks

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
Hey guys, my name is Tyler. I am the designer of the above deck. First of all, lets all practice a little grace here.
I spent 3 months designing this deck ... every card was custom designed. If all the work I put into these decks isn't worth it to you, then $15 dollars is obviously too high. This deck is for people with a specific aesthetic. Not offended if you don't like it, but don't insult me by saying my prices aren't as competitive as a mass producer like "Bicycle" brand.
Regarding international shipping ... thats my cost, so I think it's fair to ask for that cost to be covered.
I realize that I may have failed at following all of the guide-lines, for that I am sorry. My hope was to make a cool deck that lined up with the playing card history

Hey Tyler,
Welcome to the boards! Sometimes a few of us can be picky about cards, don't take it too personal. That being said, I love your design! I hope you can meet your deadline, December 18th is very close!
As an avid uncut sheet collector I am wondering if you plan on adding uncuts to your reward levels, I'd love to pick one up!

You need to take a look at other decks designed on Kickstarter that have as much or more detail for way less. I am only trying to make you aware of this so you get funding for your deck. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.
Thanks!

1: None of us are trying to offend you, we can just be picky about cards.Pedale Design wrote:Hey guys, my name is Tyler. I am the designer of the above deck. First of all, lets all practice a little grace here.

2: We aren't expecting your prices to be competitive with regular Bicycle Cards, more like Encarded's Aurum deck, which was hand-drawn over what I'm fairly sure was more than three months, and features tons of nuanced details and one of the most expensive tuck-cases in USPCC history. It's still $9.95 as well. So that's what you should shoot for, especially considering that your deck seems as though it lacks foiling and/or embossing on the tuck-case or metallic inks on the cards themselves.
3: I'm not sure what you meant by "Didn't follow the above guidelines."

Nice to see that you took time to reply. Interesting look on your deck. I might back it for 1 deck at least

If you are new and don't know, everyone here will be willing to help you as best they can to make your deck successful. But when you come on the forum and say your cost for shipping internationally is $7.00 + what you have in the deck to ship free to the US, it simple is not true. If you didn't have shipping built in your deck for US shipping then I can see you saying that is your cost, but since you do, it is not your cost.
BTW, I do love the court card designs.
Thanks!

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
In regards to responding to this thread ... its my pleasure.
I ship internationally often, and it costs me $10+
By guidelines, I meant the King stabbing himself doesn't correspond with the typical suit card, and other possible inconsistencies.
Now that the deck is taking off, I do intend to splurge on printing. Doing this project was a huge risk for me and my family. I had to put off a lot of work to make it happen, and its my first effort. So I realize I have a lot to learn. It will be impossible to accomplish, but I will be trying to serve the preferences of as many people as possible.
Thanks guys.

Shipping for 1 deck, first class mail, in a bubble pouch and a bubble envelope will cost you $6.46(first class postage for 5 ounces is $6.12 + $.30 for a shipping supplies). I am not sure what method you are using to ship items internationally then. Maybe you thought the weight was more? But those are the costs as I ship between 1,000-2,000 orders overseas every month.
Thanks!

Hi Tyler, Thanks for Joining UC.com, We love to have the actual designers on board to talk about their designs and the process of creating custom decks of cards. I really like the look of this deck and hope you reach your funding goal.
About your delivery date, have you already submitted the final design to USPCC? USPCC informed the designers a week or so ago that all decks had to be in by October 3rd if they wanted delivery by Christmas. Just wanted to make sure that you have made proper arrangements.
Looking forward to this deck and seeing what you do in the future.
Adam

As for shipping, Have are you using USPS or trying to quote form Fedex, UPS, DHL? USPS is by far the most cost effective method of shipping cards overseas.

The artwork has been submitted, and I have been working closely with the USPC staff (even today).
Thanks for all of the tips with the shipping. You'll be hearing more from me about it in a couple of weeks, when I start tackling that horse ... or hurdle ... whatever.

Hello and be welcome here at unitedcardists!
Your design is different, as already mentioned the classical King of Hearts is the suicidal King and not the King of Diamonds.
This is def. new to the courts.
Before i would pledge my hard earned money on a kickstarter project, i would like to know :
- how many decks is the print run?
- which card stock + finish will those cards end up with?
I would not use this deck for my magic effects but maybe for cardistry.

That price with that cost for shipping, thanks but no. Interesting design but somehow strikes me as off...and also strange with indicies on different corners for different court cards. Good luck though.

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
Tyler,
I have to say, the artwork you have is great and it's always a breath of fresh air to see someone do something unique like that. Your video is lovely and you are obviously a design pro.
I do, however, find it unfortunate that you are pricing things at $15 per deck. Everyone that really cares about cards knows what it costs to have a deck printed, and from I can see you have a "normal" deck with almost no extra-cost features. As such, all of the people here know what it is costing you, and what it will cost to mail, and they will feel a little taken advantage of when comparing to the many other projects that can get them a deck (shipped) for perhaps $8-10.
I'm sure you will fund your deck, but it is also important (especially for the first project) to generate goodwill in the market and one way to do that is to be fair or even low on the price. Most projects top out at $10 or so, and there are many that are hugely successful at that level. It's too late to change, obviously, but certainly something to keep in mind. You did create a lovely piece of art, and one that I would enjoy, but the one-way design and $15 will probably keep me out of it this time.
Best of luck to you and as I said, it is great to see unique and professional design.

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
It's a really nice looking deck! I love the artwork and all but the price is much too high in my opinion.
Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
Really love the design, however $22 for a deck ($15 + $7 shipping is way too high for me)
Anyone living in US should definitely help out! He got some cool designs in his website as well.

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
This deck definitely has the T11 Monarch vibe, but without the tricked out tuck box and double the price. I was also a bit put-off that you got so defensive about the price of the deck (which is ridiculous, imo) and your costs. I understand you put a lot of work and passion into your deck project, and obviously enough people liked it due to the fact that you hit your funding goal, but we have the right to voice our opinions about your pricing as well. You're not talking to a bunch of novice children here. Many are hard-core collectors, experienced deck producers, deck reviewers, and playing card retailers, so we have a pretty good idea of what is priced appropriately or not.
Many other people have produced fantastic decks, put in as much time as you have (if not more), have more features (metallic inks, foil, embossing, casino grade stock, etc...) and have priced their decks in the $6-$10 per deck range and still have had very sucessful Kick Starter campaigns. Just saying.
Having said all that, welcome to UC and congrats on your KS campaign. I hope you find the knowledge of more experienced members here useful and that you take their advice for your benefit.
*edit*
Damn, I missed Encarded's post. Yeah, Paul pretty much already covered what I had to say and probably said it better!

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
I think everyone needs to stop thinking of it as just another deck on kickstarter and look at it for what it is, art.
Yes, it is going to be more expensive, but it is not something your going to use at a regular game of poker either. It is an object to show off to your friends or have in your unopened collection. Complaining that the suicide king is on the wrong suit is mute when this deck cant be used in standard play anyway.
It is more of a modern artistic take on classic card design, not the next WPT deck.
I am going to back for a deck for the art and design, not for the usefulness of it.

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
I understand art is subjective, but playing cards are not usually something to be hung on a wall or put on a pedestal (though some people actually may do this as well), it has utility. A deck has the potential to be used, whether for a poker game or manipulated in a Sybil or used in a double lift for a card trick.
I actually open my decks and use them, as do a lot of other poker players, cardists, or magicians. This is a deck produced in the thousands, not a one-of-a-kind Monet, so let's not make this more than what it is (and I say this with all due respect to all the deck designers out there).
I know you're coming from the perspective of a card designer/producer yourself, so that's why you said what you did. But you and Adam put out great decks at almost only a third of the cost. Screw the artsy fartsy subjectivity, let's look at this as objectively as possible. Is this deck 2-3 times better than your decks? I think not. C'mon, bro, this deck is overpriced and you know it. Its all good, though, he's free to price his deck any way he wants, and he ultimately got funded. But he did it at the cost of alienating a lot of people, and I agree with Paul's theory of building up good will among the card cummunity and this is where I think he fell a bit short.

I really like this deck and buying more than one, the price is much more interesting
If you want to know something more about this artist (I think his story is interesting), this deck (including the name!) and some more card pics, you can read the interview at maxplayingcards.com:

Re: A Deck of Cards by Pedale Design - Live on Kickstarter
I don't think one color decks are bad. In fact I am backing this deck:
Personally I liked your design Tyler. But I haved backed because I felt that for me $15 is too much. On project is doing a deck with a box all in holograph and that deck is $14 and seeing the margins they are taking on everything else they are not the type to sell at or below cost. So to me $15 for a custom deck without embossing, metallic inks, or color is too much. That's just me.
