Decks from Europe and Asia

Unread post by jimdoire »

Has anybody else noticed some decks that have been out of production for a few years showing up on eBay. Seems to be coming from Asia and Europe. It doesn't make sense to me to sell a deck over a certain volume at an undervalued price from that far away. The card was printed in the US, went to Lithuania and now is being sold back at a decent price. My main concern is wondering if they are knockoffs. Any opinions?

Sure. Let me dig you up a couple. The easy ones to find are on eBay. I just find it funny how a deck of cards that was made in either Ohio or Kentucky can make it to China or Eastern Europe and be sold at a competitive price. I'm not saying for sure these are knockoffs. I'm saying it would be a peculiar route to take from being printer near in OH or KY and end up in my collection in TX by way of China or

Sex Pistols Deck

Red Arcane

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Ellu ... xy63FSoDMm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

https://www.ebay.com/itm/RED-ARCANE-Pla ... SwBLlVLPBY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Aurelian

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ELLUSIONIST-AU ... SwwvZZP-QZ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And some of these foreign sellers offer free shipping. I sell on eBay and getting a deck of cards out is usually around $4.00 up to about three decks.

These are no knockoff decks. Just merchants getting decks for wholesale prices. The prices for The Aurelian deck is actually more than Ellusionist was selling them. I believe the red Arcane deck was part of the 2016 Ellusionist sale, so probably a lot of people including international dealers bought them there.
The Sex Pistols deck was made for Medicom, a japanese toy company, and I think it was primarily distributed from Asia.

I was thinking something was fishy because with only 5000 decks made, today the market is flooded with them. I'm thinking red Arcane when I mention that. As I said, seems strange that they would end up on the other side of the planet (at least from the US) and be sold at a competitive price. When you see product starting to show up on eBay and a better price than what they were selling for a year or two ago, you have to wonder. I know I wouldn't not sell my Red Arcanes for as low as some of these people are. I'm not saying that these cards are bogus because I simply don't know if they are or not. I just find it peculiar. I've been collecting cards for about ten years now and the prices have remained steady. Also notice how none of these dealers are sell Bicycle Hemp, Hope Of Haiti, Tragic Royalty or any other flops.

"Only" 5000 made. Only. When a deck is "limited" to "only" 5000 it means you are able to find plenty for sale at least for the next 10 years.

And how is it hard to believe that countries in Europe or Asia would have American products, Newsflash: There is life outside of USA.

And the reason they are sold so cheap is that it's a mediocre deck with a large print number and the price used to be way too high for them.

Of course there is life outside of the USA. But I think we can both agree that "life" is a very subjective term. A poop eating maggot has a "life" every bit as much as you do. Well, except he gets laid more often. :shock:

So if I am understanding you correctly, you're saying that the same technology and business planning that the Chinese use to build a exact replica of a ten thousand dollar Gibson Les Paul guitar and sell them for four hundred dollars, all while STAYING PROFITABLE and FOOLING THE EXPERTS, cannot happen to something as easy to duplicate as a deck of cards? This IS what you're saying if I'm understanding you correctly. is it not?

And I was just busting your chops. I'm sure you pull more tail than a maggot. Well, I'm not sure as in I'd bet the farm on it. Obviously, I'm not there every time you whoop the ol' hound dawg out so who knows how much you're really knocking out. I don't know, maybe that maggot is going yard way more than you ever dreamed of. But I don't think so. I'm in your corner.

Yeah. Whatever, buddy.

And I never said that there are not fake products made in China (learn to read and don't put words in my mouth) just that 1. There is a modern world outside of USA, that has American products, usually the same stuff you have back in the States (What I meant by *life*) 2. The American products are brought overseas by these things called cargo boats and planes. They can get there in just a matter of hours. Some guy in Malaysia selling an American printed deck is nothing to wonder. Now, I can also explain this with crayons if you would prefer that?

And I wouldn't consider any of those prices to be that good, quite expensive for mediocre decks in my opinion.

I know I didn't ask for your opinion so until I do, keep it stored way up your ass.

Cargo boat? Those are called cargo ships. A boat is what you get into when the ship sinks or you're on the water for some recreation. I thought all Finns were a seafaring people or at least descended from them? I guess you're the guy they leave to just sit on the dock and speak sarcastic nonsense to himself. You also might want to know that none of what you say is funny. You may want to rethink you schtick. I'd explain my point that you obviously still fail to grasp but I don't need any more of your "witty" banter. You really bore the smurf right out of me.

I do like Kimi Räikkönen quite a lot. He's a Finn. You should be more like him. You can start by practicing brevity and being successful.

I'm assuming it was somebody else, because you, master of the English language that you are, would know that "opinion" doesn't actually mean "blind agreement," and that countervailing points are to be expected.
jimdoire wrote:Cargo boat? Those are called cargo ships. A boat is what you get into when the ship sinks or you're on the water for some recreation.
How long have you been working in export logistics? Because I've been in the industry coming up on five years now and I can tell you we use "boat" to refer to container vessels on a literally daily basis. Sure, it's colloquial; this is an internet forum, not an academic journal. But nobody's confused by what's meant in context. The only reason to pick nits would be if, say, you wanted to shitpost on a non-native English speaker because he didn't comply with some shibboleth you picked up from Mall Rats. But I'm sure that's not you, right Jim? (How many languages do you speak, by the way?)

I have to say, Jim, it takes a special kind of chutzpah to tell someone else "none of what you say is funny" and "you may want to rethink your schtick [sic]," immediately after doing a tired retread of the "Ugly American" stock character. Comparing non-US residents to "maggots" is a bold comedic choice, but I think it'll get big laughs at your next Trump rally and/or Klanbake! Whatever you do, don't cut the part of your act where you bring up, unprompted, how much "tail" others are getting or not getting. It makes you look extremely cool and secure in who you are as a person.

This forum is a great resource for seeking out the advice and expertise of people who know a lot about collectible playing cards, but ultimately it's your money on the line. If you're not gonna trust Chinese vendors regardless of what anybody tells you, don't buy from them. Happy hunting!

Re: Decks from Europe and Asia

FIVE WHOLE YEARS IN TRANSPORTATION. I didn't know I was talking to Marco Polo. I was twenty years old when I joined the US Merchant Marine. I sailed for Atlantic Richfield on their super tankers and even on some of their not so super tankers. I achieved the rank of third mate but due to corporate structure, the bulk of my seatime was spent sailing as an AB. If you know the maritime industry, you'll know what an AB is. Onboard EVERY vessel in ARCO's fleet, anything that was EVER called a boat hung on a davit or was decompressed, folded and stuffed into an orange drum that would pop open if it ever went underwater and begin to inflate. Trust me when I say that NO ONE in the maritime industry would ever call a ship a boat. So there was that experience. After that, I left merchant sailing as my wife and I were starting our family and I wanted to be home more than five months out of the year. I was still working for ARCO when American Airlines hired me. There I spent time in almost every department that company had to offer. Yield management, purchasing and procurement, INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT, reservations, printing and publication and finally found IT and communication service to my liking. I'm 58 and IT was in it's infancy so I thought with the money they were throwing at it, what the hell. I spent my last 18 years in that branch of the company. I traveled most of AA's system working on both their reservation, ticketing and terminal services and their back office networks.

How many languages do I speak? One very well and four others so-so. That's the great thing about being American. The world pretty much knows English. I've never been in a situation where I needed to speak Finn. Spanish and Italian (nearly the same language) has come up more than you would think. The Italian is really ironic considering I've never been to Italy. My mother was an immigrant from Austria and I was raised in a multi-generational home with my grandparents living with us. My grandmother was Jewish so I don't know if you count Yiddish as a language but I'm never at a loss in a kosher deli in any part of the world. Let me make this one point clear. I'm not saying that the world needs to bend to America's will and learn our language in order to participate in the world economy. I was never in any position to make that decision but let's face it, it is the way it is. You cannot deny it. I've been to Japan and their English is better than most Americans. Germany, France, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia, Perú, Argentina and a few other countries I have worked in all used English as a common language. I tried to speak their language out of respect. I can survive with Spanish and Italian. How many musical instruments do YOU play? How many different animals do YOU know how to hunt? How many industrial tools do YOU know how to use? How many thousand foot oil tankers can YOU pull up to a dock like you were parking at a grocery store? How many network systems do YOU know how to install from the ground up? You're really proud of yourself having gone through you countries ADMITTEDLY superior school system. You're nothing special in Europe. I have cousins in Austria that can speak seven languages. I don't know how that rates in your world but I'm pretty impressed. He's a soldier in the Austrian military. He works IT just like I do. Well, rifleman first, IT second.

I do not see the correlation between MallRats and the shibboleth of certain people. Maybe something was lost in the translation?

Chutzpah. Yiddish. Music to my ears.

I NEVER compared non-US residents to a maggot. I see you have a passive aggressive nature where you like to twist words. You told me that "there is life outside of the US". Let's not forget, it was YOU who spoke down to me first. All I said was that a maggot had a life as well as any human anywhere on the planet. I NEVER said that Finn's or any other people were maggots. I think you're really reaching to get something on me. That wasn't it.

What is it with Euro's always bringing up Trump? That's an entire can of worms that I'm not going to waste anymore of my time explaining to you. He's a shithead no question. And your point is. Ah, smurf it. I don't care what you're point is. Trump will not impact Finland one bit so YOU bringing him up is just another reach. Would you like to discuss Finland's turnabout(s) during WWII? You guys couldn't decide whose side you wanted to be on could you? And you're worried about Trump. :)

This coming from the member who felt it necessary to interject into a conversation that did not involve him, the very well-articulated and concise question of "Why is Jim such an @$$rammer..?".

I came here to ask a question about the possibility of there being knockoff cards created and was met with Räpylätassu's witty retort of "Now, I can also explain this with crayons if you would prefer that?" or the condescending "Newsflash: There is life outside of USA". I did not come here to roll over and give it up easy to be subjected to some senior members snarky remarks.

How about a few of you clean up your own house before you worry about mine?

Back to cards then :)

One of the eBay sellers that you posted, c571121, is a very big collector of cards so I can assure you he isn’t selling fakes. I bought from him before.
His daughter helped him fund one of my favourite Bicycle branded decks, Emperor, on Kickstarter.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/16 ... s-by-uspcc

Shop4top is also, in my opinion, legit. I’ve purchased from them before and believe that the decks are the real thing.

As for the other listings, I can’t comment as I don’t know of the sellers, however I don’t think there are many fakes going around especially that could fool card collectors. Even the Bicycle Ultragaff fake decks being sold on eBay from China are easily distinguishable from the real ones.

Hope it helps :)
