Honeybee V2 by Penguin Magic
Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well!
I wanted to give you all a heads-up that Penguin will be launching our first Kickstarter in just over 24 hours. We're taking Valentine's Day, the sweetest day of the year, and adding a little Honey!
Honeybees are one of our favorite decks that we've produced, and were also our quickest to sell out. We get messages every week about whether or not there will be another version, since many people either missed them the first time around, or they want more of them for their collection or day-to-day use. Since day one, we have also gotten a lot of requests asking if we would ever do a bordered version. On Feb 14th at noon eastern, we're opening up the campaign to deliver on those requests.
The biggest difference in the deck is that the backs are now bordered. The custom Tuck, Ace of Spades, Joker, and custom color/texture court cards are pretty much the same as the originals. There's a lot that everyone seemed to love about the deck, so it didn't feel right to change things that we thought were already great. We're also making both the Yellow and Black decks available simultaneously.
I know some of you will ask, "Why Kickstarter, why now?" For us it's more about the "crowd" and less about the "funding" when it comes to trying this out. The first Honeybees sold out in 2 days, and a lot of people didn't get their hands on them. Doing a campaign like this hopefully gives folks plenty of time to pledge, and get them at the best price. It allows us to print the correct number of decks to meet demand without significantly over or under printing. I hope you guys will see from our goal (Only $12,000 for a 2-deck campaign) and our pledge pricing that we're not trying to make this a "lazy cash grab".
We also worked with Randy Butterfield to create an all-new version of the deck. This one will be a stretch goal and it is GORGEOUS. It is a black ink and gold foil Metalluxe version of the deck. If we hit the stretch goal, we're going to pull out all the stops with this deck - black paper tuck with multiple foils - individually numbered seals (limited to 1,000 decks), etc. I really hope we get to produce it.
I'll be sure to come back tomorrow and update this post with a link to the campaign page.
EDIT: Here is the campaign page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pe ... guin-magic" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thank you!

Thanks Azid! Launch time is Noon eastern time, which is 9AM pacific or 5PM in London. Hopefully everyone can extrapolate from there.
Also, we do have some early bird levels, so definitely be sure to get in as close to launch time as possible!

I will definitely be keeping my eye on the campaign for the special edition. May even pick up a few V2s.

I prefer the borderless but I'll be in for a few of these. If the MetalLuxe gets unlocked, holy crap, I'll be all over that version.

I like that you changed the number from 15, border-less, to 17, white border. I'm in!

I was thinking if the Special Edition deck shown was the Metalluxe version. Well, looks like I'll be staying up one more hour.

Bikefanatic, the Special Edition deck is the Metalluxe deck, which is a stretch goal.
There are Standard Black & Yellow decks in the campaign, and the Special Edition Metalluxe deck will be unlocked if we hit our stretch goal.

You'll add on a certain amount of money for each Special Ed. deck you want.serubi wrote:How do you pledge for the Special edition if it's a stretch goal?
@Shermjack, I didn't even think of the year as the number. Thanks.

Re: Honeybee V2 by Penguin Magic - Kickstarter Feb 14
Serubi, you can choose any other standard pledge level, and pledge for any amount you wish. Pledges can be edited or cancelled at any time before the campaign ends.
Assuming the Metalluxe gets unlocked, you'll be able to edit your pledge to switch it over from the standard pledge to a Metalluxe tier. If it's not unlocked and you don't want any standard decks, you can simply cancel your pledge before the campaign ends.
We will be running the campaign for 30 days, and will send reminders and updates to backers over the course of the process, including a "Final 24 hours" update so that folks have a final opportunity to make any desired changes.

Re: Honeybee V2 by Penguin Magic - Kickstarter Feb 14
So if the Metalluxe deck is unlocked, will I have to exchange my current early bird tier for the Metalluxe tier? Or will I be able to add Metalluxe decks in addition to my current tier? The campaign states: "Only 1,000 Metalluxe decks will be created, and they will not be available as add-on items". I've never heard of dynamic tiers like this on KickstarterReylek wrote:Serubi, you can choose any other standard pledge level, and pledge for any amount you wish. Re: Honeybee V2 by Penguin Magic - Kickstarter - Now Live
Hey Serubi. Thanks for being Backer #1!
Yes, right now the plan is to create new tiers that folks would switch to in order to do the Metalluxe. That's not an ideal solution, but unless we can find a better way via add-ons to ensure that we don't over-sell the 1k Metalluxe decks, it's the best way to control that only 1k are available and claimed.
We would hate for the person who backs the 1,001st Metalluxe deck to make their add-on amount, only to find out later that all the decks are claimed.
There is still a bit of time before Metalluxe is unlocked, and up until then we will continue to investigate other options to make the decks available in as clear, controlled, and fair a manner as possible.
Thanks!

Would a system like GW use help in anyway? Like "starting at 10am so-and-so day, PM us then adjust your pledge and first come, first serve until 1K is reached"

Have you looked at Backerkit? I've seen some project creators use it for add-ons. Their website (https://www.backerkit.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) says they have inventory control. Maybe this is an option?

Backerkit only lets you add-on after the project is complete so I don't think that would help inventory control in this case but I could be wrong.serubi wrote:Have you looked at Backerkit? Re: Honeybee V2 by Penguin Magic - Kickstarter - Now Live
We do plan to use BackerKit, and they do offer better inventory control, but Vasta is correct that it's only controllable after the campaign itself is over.
Our other option would be to change the Metalluxe from strictly 1,000 to open-ended but still limited to cover however many are pledged within Kickstarter. They would still be individually numbered. Would you all be OK with that? If we had less than 1,000 claimed, then the current 1k cap would still stand.

Re: Honeybee V2 by Penguin Magic - Kickstarter - Now Live (w
I think this would be worse because of delays in getting Backerkit manager link email. Plus there are so many steps involved you could have a Special edition added on but lose it if someone's faster filling in info. Remember when KS used Amazon for payment and the delay from clicking Pledge to getting back to project only to see you missed it because someones page moved faster?vasta41 wrote:Backerkit only lets you add-on after the project is complete so I don't think that would help inventory control in this case but I could be wrong.serubi wrote:Have you looked at Backerkit? If they know our backer name maybe a small refund for the 10 of us who got the EB if the Metallux gets unlocked and we pledge for it.

I like that idea. I'm also okay with the printing of more decks while only the 1st 1,000 are individually numbered but I know that's a sore spot for many people so maybe Rich's idea is best.RichK wrote:If they know our backer name maybe a small refund for the 10 of us who got the EB if the Metallux gets unlocked and we pledge for it.
