Apothecary by Seasons Playing Cards

Unread post by ivan »

Apothecary is the latest project coming from Seasons Playing Cards. Amazing attention to details from the talented Alex Chin.

Scheduled to launch on KS sometime in September. More details at:

That looks amazing. I just wish it wasn't so boxed in like that. Border + frame isn't a good combo.

Not saying it should be borderless (even though that would be awesome, as it usually is), but just removing the frame and completing the outside edges of the design would go a long way.

I for one like the frame. It highlights the design by adding emphasis to it. Just my opinion though! Unless you have microscopic borders, Tom aka MagikFingerz aka Mr. Border Patrol will not like it. So just ignore his opinions. :ugdance:

I wish too that the back wasn't so boxed in but more in the style of Inverno and Verana where the design breaks the border.

That being said, this still looks amazing.

Well, now you're just mean  I didn't even comment on the thickness of the borders...

And btw, if I could get a custom title on this forum, I would definitely choose "Border Patrol" :ugeek:

I decided to include the border because it was an element that was able to both tie together the back to the faces as well as tie the series together across decks. It's a pattern I found off an older advertisement and found it to really capture the time period and theme I was going for. I think once you see the series as a whole the border element will be justified for those that question it a bit. Given that I've done borderless for all my previous decks I really liked having the border here as an element that the inner design can tip toe across to provide a subtle emphasis of extra depth.

Also I'd like to show a little background on the process. Every single design I've done has been fully vectorized individually line by line resulting in the exacting detail that has come to be associated with Seasons. Each line isn't just a stroke, but a calculated trajectory and specified width done by hand, line by line, to make sure the illustration is exactly how I see it. Hope you can guys like the behind the scenes view.

I'm amazed at designers like you Alex who can take something you see in your eye/mind and put it on the computer then paper making it come out perfect to you with such graceful flowing lines, curves, and shading. I can't wait.
Move on, nothing to see here.

An official date has been released for October 17th, National Playing Card Collection Day. What better way to inaugurate the holiday than with a Seasons launch! I suggest joining the FB event so that you'll know exactly what time it launches across time zones. FB is pretty good about mentioning the day before and hour before so it stays on your radar. https://www.facebook.com/events/174603119654834/

A closer look at the tuck. Full bleed pattern emphasize relative to apothecary-style labels of old mixed with modern. And for the first time in my life, yes, color :o

I'll be the international shipping police. I wish there was a disclaimer with some of the projects along the lines of "international backer don't get excited, when it goes live it will be double the price for you".

This deck looks awesome, where do you see international prices being? can I get excited about it?

Regarding international shipping I'm not sure yet since I actually haven't gotten to the campaign listing yet believe it or not. If you were okay with the last campaign you should be fine. I can't imagine Gambler's Warehouse changing their fulfillment rates drastically.

I freaking love cards and I always strive to make the collection experience more than just a tick in your mailbox. For this specific campaign I added a level of engagement through a companion interaction that will grow along with the campaign and send out with updates. The site is called http://www.ApothecaryTales.com and although I'm not a writer, I hope you'll still enjoy the fun of it and the effort involved.

Backed!

Is the Black label edition just the same deck, inside another sleeve? (i.e. is the tuck box the same?)

Yeah, the labeling style with engraving was something I knew I wanted for the theme but the factories don't have that capability. I went personal and you can see in the video that they are hand run. I'll be handwrapping and gluing each of these as well so I had to account for the labor. I think of it more as an upgrade of a single deck rather than trying to create two different decks.

The deck is beautiful, the kickstarter page is great... but this is one of those projects I shouldn't have gotten excited about :|
$8 int shipping for one deck is too much for me. Randy's Rome project which is also fullfilled by Gamblers has just $3 int shipping. I'm guessing this is because you chose the tracking option?

Another issue: pledging for the pair totals $39 (of which $13 are shipping), while pledging for one deck is $22 (of which $8 are shipping) and adding on a deck ($15 in price) totals $37. wouldn't it be more reasonable then to have $11 dollars shipping for the pair pledge tier, so it is at least equal to the addon price for international backers?

Best of luck!

Tomorrow at 2pm CST I'll be revealing the deck how I originally imagined it to be with the world's first color-changing boxes. I've been working to try to get these to production for a while and was originally supposed to be for launch but took until now to release. (Boxes are step 1. Cards are step 2.) They truly do embody the term "touch inspiration" for this specific theme. They will be used to box gilded decks in silver for Insights and rose gold for Ponderings and differentiated with a lighter white theme to compliment the darker black themes. Until then enjoy the shine!

Image

There will be Early Bird boxes for them available tomorrow. Hope to see you guys there.

Will these be unlimited or at least likely to last a few hours?

Wasn't planning on getting up at 3am... :? ...but then again, it wouldn't be the first time. ;)

Haha thank you for your dedication Gareth! There will be 200 White Cabinets of Curiosity that are limited in special tiers made specifically to connect and stack with the wooden ones. I might make a video for this since I don't think people are catching that they stack. The gilded decks themselves though will be available as a Kickstarter only item through the campaign. The true magic is really in the responsive design of the boxes though. I'm making a new video for the KS to show this so hopefully it'll translate well.

If you're already a backer I'll be posting an update along with Chapter 4 tomorrow at launch time.
