patricklun - Your upside down pips on your black Joker really stand out on the photo. Anything "1-way" should be right-side up at least on the photo. I like "1-way" cards. really, I do...

Well hell, I vote for pink.
Or yellow...
Different colors doesn't make it special.

Re: Mirage Playing Cards - Now Available!
Sprouts,
I was kidding. I don't understand the allure of just changing the deck color and expect people to buy it to keep their "set" complete. Yes the blue/teal is a great color as is the maroon but the designers, not just this deck either, I feel aren't pushing themselves for new and creative. I'm sure a yellow with light gray deck would be just as nice looking but I feel it's an easy way out to make another deck with their name on it.
If someone wants to enlighten me on why they like just a color change of multiple decks I'd be happy to learn.
Now I have to drink heavily to try to forget those pictures!

I know that traditionally playing cards adopted a two color set concept to accommodate poker players that would rotate the deck they played with, it's common practice to have one deck in play and a second deck at the ready for game two, and then switch back and forth between the two each subsequent game, and using the same deck (same color) can be confusing or cause problems, so it became popular practice to use two different colors of the same decks.
When I play poker with my buddies we use one red and one blue bike deck.
Red and blue are the most common color variants, I assume because of the availability and use of red and blue bikes, exemplifying the standard set of playing cards. And the color variant idea kind of took off from that tradition and now is just accepted as a bit of a playing card design standard, in part a nod to that tradition and partially in accommodation of poker players that want to have matching pairs of decks they can play with.

Re: Mirage Playing Cards - Now Available!
If play for card games was the motivating factor for re-coloring custom decks, then why not just release 2 colors at the beginning at the same time? The actual fact of the matter for most custom deck recolors is that its just a marketing ploy for a cash grab. You introduce your deck, if it sells well, then wait a while and release a second color to try to regenerate interest and sales. If that works, then wash, rinse, and repeat ad nauseam. These guys know that at $15+ a pop, most people aren't going to shell out over $30 just for a set of cards to play poker with, so no, this isn't being done to accommodate poker players.Justin O. wrote:I know that traditionally playing cards adopted a two color set concept to accommodate poker players that would rotate the deck they played with, it's common practice to have one deck in play and a second deck at the ready for game two, and then switch back and forth between the two each subsequent game, and using the same deck (same color) can be confusing or cause problems, so it became popular practice to use two different colors of the same decks.

I was mostly just trying to elucidate the history of color variations more than defend the current design cultures implementation of them

Re: Mirage Playing Cards - Now Available!
I would venture to guess that the main reason why this edition is released now and not along with the first one is a financial reason. Patrick self funded the whole print by himself as far as I know, and that is a lot of money. With him being a working professional (magic consultant along with designer), I bet he could've gone through one print run if he would have been unable to sell out, but putting all that money on the line for two prints of a deck which he could not be 100% sure would sell would be quite a gamble. Now that the first run sold out (and not during an extremely long time period either) it makes sense for him to give it a go with a second color now that he has the funds from the first print-run having sold.
So, tl;dr I believe it comes down to not wanting to drop too much money (or simply being unable to do so) in one go.
Me, I'm personally already in line to pick up a few as I very much liked the first deck and want to support Patrick's projects. For a straight up collector perhaps a recolor isn't as interesting, but for me as a user it's a welcome release.
