HIERONYMUS Playing cards: Lotrek meets BOSCH (WIP)
Hi dear friends,
This is one of the decks I'm currently working on and I feel is my most difficult artistic undertaking so far. Extremely demanding but fascinating. It's an idea I had 3 years ago but it took time to grow and take its shape. It's really big, I think I should say "massive" -always from an artistic point of view. It will be focused on painting and I believe that it's quite unique at least as a theme and approach. There will be special "happenings" held during pre-launch period, so stay tuned for more.
(EDIT: the mystery lasted only a couple of hours and the theme and name is already revealed thanks to Bruno...)
Thank you,
Lotrek

Re: HIERONYMUS Playing cards: Lotrek meets BOSCH (WIP)
Apparently It wasn't that difficult to guess...
"HIERONYMUS" is inspired by the extraordinary work of Hieronymus Bosch. This year is the 500th anniversary of his death (1450 - 1516) and I think that now is the time to do this deck.
I'm using elements of his work, repainting them in my own style. All artwork is completely original (I haven't copy-pasted a single stroke) although absolutely relevant to Bosch's paintings.
More details and pics soon.

Well this looks interesting and lovely! After looking at some of his work I'm really excited, it's the weird stuff I love. Reminds me of Alex Kuno, an area artist I had been pushing to do a deck.
Looks great so far! More please.

Bosch, such a great artists, his works on these days is valueted a lot!
I'm super curious on how the deck would be.. I mean.. that art form is pretty original for a deck of playing cards, should be complicated!

Re: HIERONYMUS Playing cards: Lotrek meets BOSCH (WIP)
Absolutely. I want the cards to be still playable but the artwork will be complicated. The artistic challenge is big as I'm not using original Bosch's artwork but I'm recreating it in my own style and taste. The result should be shouting: "BOSCH", not "Lotrek".Sunz wrote:Bosch, such a great artists, his works on these days is valueted a lot!

You got any ideas on what basis to recreate his artwork? I mean.. from what idea of Bosch you are starting? Any particular opera you are inspired on? (The Garden of Earthly Delights.. just guessing)Lotrek wrote:Absolutely. I want the cards to be still playable but the artwork will be complicated. I personally like the Inferno set, the chaotic elements of struggling for survival, fighting against an evil supremacy.. rendered with a realistic perspective!

Re: HIERONYMUS Playing cards: Lotrek meets BOSCH (WIP)
@Sunz:
I'm mainly focusing on the "Garden of earthly delights" but I'm also using elements from the "Temptation of St Anthony" and a few other works. One thought is to make two completely different decks, one representing the heavenly side of his work, while the other will be demonic, drawing inspiration from his nightmarish depictions of Hell.

That is where i was leading to! So you are launching this with 2 decks at the same time, or plan to make 2 consequent versions?Lotrek wrote:@Sunz:

Btw, great idea! That's really challengy, and after all of your work i'm sure you'll be proud of what you created!
Can't wait to see other sneak peeks

He throws at us this great concept on this future decks, but we need to wait a lot to have other news for thisNCarter wrote:Well I already know, as I'm sure everyone else does that this will be a winner. More images!
It would take a lot of time to design the deck, plus it's a real challenge!
But yeah, it will have a lot of success!

Re: HIERONYMUS Playing cards: Lotrek meets BOSCH (WIP)
I really like "El Bosco", I have to go back to El Prado to revisit "El Jardín de las Delicias", as we know it in spanish.
There is another, contemporary, artist that comes to my mind when I see your first painting, and that is Luigi Serafini, from the "Codex Seraphinianus". I got it as a gift a couple months back and it's extremely intriguing and fascinating. It could make a nice deck also.
But focusing on this project, it looks awesome, Lotrek. Thanks

I usually begin with a very rough sketch, only to indicate the placement and main shape of the court.
Here's the source image from Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" triptych:
