D&D - Stranger & Stranger The Ultimate Deck

Unread post by CBJ »

Looks like another new deck from D&D

http://www.notcot.com/archives/2012/12/ ... e-deck.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Stranger & Stranger, you’ve outdone yourselves once again. Following their Holiday Spirits of the past few years, “to celebrate the year we broke out of our alcohol comfort zone and designed premium olive oils, fine foods, luxury luggage, and just plain crazy new stuff, we teamed up with the amazing Dan & Dave to create this, our Ultimate Deck.” And broke out of their alcohol they did! Previously, anyone who asked me for suggestions on alcohol packaging, i undoubtedly told them, Stranger & Stranger! Well it sounds like it has been quite the year for the incredible design group… and these cards (no surprise) are STUNNING, down to the tiniest of details! From the matte black magnetic box… to the velvety pouches… to the festive ambigram… to the seal on the deck… to the gilded edges of the deck… to the artwork adorning each card… it’s a magnificent deck of cards! And the quality is incredible, as are all Dan & Dave cards (like the awesome Fulton’s Clip Joint Playing Cards we wrote about previously)… take a peek at all the incredible details of Stranger & Stranger’s Ultimate Deck on the next page!"

The packaging is nice, the cards are not. This is just a novelty deck at the end of the day. I don't see much applications for magic or cardistry. Is it just me, or does it looke like the full-bleed back design is off-centered/miscut?

I feel the same way. I actually really like these cards and think the artwork is beautiful. I understand that it's not practical for cardistry/magic but you can't expect every deck of cards to be that way. I really enjoy the back design and the faces, and usually I'm not a big fan of glided edges but with this deck it looks fantastic! I am betting they are going to be pretty pricey, which is going to make or break it for me.

The back is a little ugly to me. That black with that shade of 'gold' is boring. I do like the idea of the deck, but after seeing and owning Emmanual's curator (which I love), this particular one doesn't interest me.

It's a cool deck and the box is awesome, but I'm not a fan of the faces. Plus, they will probably be on the expensive side. It's a pass for me.

To paraphrase: Here comes the new year, same as the old year. (We won't get fooled again!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!)

Anyways, wildly speculating and over-reacting is all part of a fan boards for anything. I figure new releases are the equivalent of game threads - it's kind of an obligation to write outlandish stuff.

Like, these new cards - that's an ambigram that just tried too darn hard (Like the "Split Spades/Superstitious". And "Ultimate Deck"?! I don't think that word means what they think it means.
And for them, a "stranger" is probably when they sit on their hand until it gets numb and then flourish.

Despite its one-way back, and faces that I'm not too interested in... I might pick up one.

The packaging is a knockout, beautiful. The gloss lacquer on matte paper with the emboss is stellar. I wish I'd come up with that box display, it's fantastic. The cards are obviously just for fun, you would not expect to play or use those in any fashion. The gilded edges will make them unusable for any kind of handling, the faces are just for the art and the backs are pretty plain for all the detail there is in them.

It's a lovely collector item but it would seem they took all the function out, so it ended up being 100% form. It's a beautiful form on the whole, don't get me wrong but can't really live up to the claim of "ultimate deck" when you can't really use it.

Nice item, but not one that I personally feel inspired to purchase.

(Probably the biggest problem I have is the fact that I cannot make out that ambigram AT ALL. It's frustrating not being able to to read the words on your purchase.)

I could be wrong, but I think it's suppose to be "stranger" in the ambigram.

You are correct, the word is stranger. The fact that the ambigram is that hard to read is just silly. But, perhaps the theme of this deck?

Of course Lumpy

Now it makes sense.
These cards are a metaphor.
The tuck box is all sleek and sophisticated, very grown up.
While the cards inside are "for kids"
D$D are trying to shows no matter how old we are and how professional we may try to look
We should always remain a kid inside.
WOW those guys are so much more deep than I realized.
I am sold

I would love a set of these, but i have a feeling im going to be priced out, in fact i dont even think these are going to be sold outright, maybe a free set with every $200 spent or something, knowing D&D its not going to be an easily attainable amount if they are headed this direction.
